I like to take some .5mg xanax on fridays and go to party, I know that it is dangerous to mix it with alcohol, but i found that when im on xanax y control myself better and just drink like two beers and have a lot of fun without getting wasted and hungover.

You're definitely skating on thin ice there. Any kind of sedative, especially when mixed with alchohol, can lead to tolerance and then addicition. It's amazing how fast and how easy it can happen. Withdrawing from drugs like xanax (which are in the class of drugs 'benzodiazapene') is very difficult, and can take several weeks.

Even if you don't become chemically dependent, you are disturbing your natural brain chemistry every time you use drugs like that. Not only do you build tolerance, but the imbalance in bran chemistry can lead to increased anxiety, which will make you want to take the sedative more often! My advice is to avoid xanax or other sedatives, unless you have a medical need for them.

I think you are especially at risk, because from your own question you indicate the tendency to lose control of your own drinking when you don't take xanax. That's not a good sign, and is indicative that you're already heading in the direction towards addiction.

I'm not trying to be a kill-joy, or to scare you, but just be careful. Take it from me, its a lot easier to prevent an addiction that it is to recover from one!

Absolutely. While not a medical doctor, I have personal experience in a similar situation. The term "control yourself" is pretty relative. What you're doing is replacing your alcohol consumption with prescription sedation. Think of it like saying, "I don't eat as much steak when I have a salad first...." Over time, you'll need more pills/alcohol to meet your level of satisfaction. I did the same things when I was younger and it quickly advanced to other things. I started off drinking, then mixed hydrocodone and found I could have 2 or 3 drinks instead of my normal amount. Later on, other drugs came into the equation. Things I swore I would never do, I ended up doing. If you're having to "control" your drinking, you might have a problem. I did.

Definitely do not mix with alcohol. If you haven't been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder then you shouldn't take xanax at all. I've picked up people who have taken xanax and they didn't need it. Can you say someone call 911? It could happen.

YES, YES, AND YES.

Pros:
* I used to LOVE the way Xanax made me feel when I combined it with alcohol.

Cons:
* Picking fights and getting my A$S kicked.
* people always thought I was going to fall over, and it was annoying to hear them say so all the time.

developing a dependency is what i'd worry about, although a tolerance is possible to develop too.

Stupid, stupid, stupid idea. Popping pills for fun makes you just as much of a drug abuser as anyone else.

And mixing with alcohol? HA! You're just trying to kill yourself right?

Oh that is REALLY a bad thing. You are just kidding yourself that it helps you to control your drinking. Now instead of just (what I assume from your posting) an alcohol problem, you are have a drug problem, too.

Yes, you shouldn't mix it with alcohol.

And yes, you can develop a dependence problem. It's addictive.
