Currently in the United States, petroleum engineering is the top paying engineering field with an average annual salary of $97,350 according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Employment of petroleum engineers may vary with demand for petroleum.

Many engineers eventually migrate into management or other high paying career fields.

I guess most engineers did not chose engineering to earn more money but probably because they're interested in stuffs such as building structures, creating machines, electricty, applications of physics, etc... and probably because they're good in math :-). Most of them end up as worker drones for economists, business administrators, and to all others who know more about money.

But still there are engineers who make good money by practicing engineering itself. Mostly, they are those who engage in engineering economic analysis. They are those who stray a little from the technical aspects of engineering and engage more on the financial aspects like project investment appraisals.

As an electrical engineer, I researched this topic a couple of years ago and found the top three highest paid fields were chemical, electrical/computer, and nuclear (with a BS degree). This was found in the Kipplinger Letters. You may try looking there for more current information. :)

Straight out of college with a BS degree, chemical engineers are paid the most on average. Something like $56,000/yr. This is because there are less chem e's than any other profession, and no other type of engineer has anywhere close to the same understanding of chemical processes.

Go with what your interested in and what jobs are in demand. Most engineers make decent money, but often times the highest paid have the least job security

The field that you are best at. Therefore the field you are most interested in. Don't chase dollars. Find something you enjoy, and get good at it, them the money will follow.
