I'm 19 and dating a 25 year old. And everything's great, but the most annoying thing is when people say "Oh, you must've had a bad relationship with your dad, because now you're trying to date guys who are older so they can fill the gap."

I actually had a good relationship with my dad. And this guy is only 6 years older--nowhere near old enough to be my father.

I don't get it. Help?

Sleek - Hahah. Thanks for making me laugh. I know this avatar's a bit strange, my friend made it for me. Thought it was funny. I look nothing like that.

F. Perdurabo - Actually it is sometimes my friends who make comments. They like him and everything, but they can't resist joking about it occasionally.

Hi dont listen to them, its nasty and horrble and if these are your friend then they arent much good friends to you. You can date who you want and when you want, there is no law when your ober 18 what age you can and cannot have a relationship with. Many people have parteners that are older than them, some much older. No one should be making comments like that as it is personnal and none of there business. I can see why you are upset. All you should think about is you your partener and the relationship and remember it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks as long as you like the person your with. So dont thought it all away if you were thinking of ending the relationship because of what these nasty people are saying. They are just jealous. Just keep your head held up high and ignore everyone.

Yeah they're just people. People run their mouths and stir the pot of poop and wallow in the dung of drama. I'd tell you to live your life they way you want to and tell those people saying this to mind their own business because they don't live your life and what right have they got to tell you who you can love!? There is no actual proof that having a bad relationship with your father causes you to date older guys. 6 years is not that older and besides that you're not dating 20-50 year older men than you anyways. Tell them off!!!!!!!!!!!

Sigmund Freud's fascination in Oedipus complex weighed very heavily on his theories regarding human behavior and sexuality as regards to relationships with parents. Research has proved him mostly incorrect. Like urban legends, his theories hold truth and fascination for the self proclaimed analysts who insist on putting in their two cents worth. I think they have been watching too much Dr. Phil. Six years is no big deal. How can that possibly translate to a problem with your father? Do they even know your father? As for myself, I am a little older (OK almost old enough to be your father) and am dating a woman 10 years older than myself. YIKES!!! I must hate my mother?? :-)

What people are saying that to you? I hope not your friends, because if it is your friends saying that to you, then they are a bunch of judgemental clown hats who should mind their own damned business.

What you do is YOUR own damned business, and six years difference? Every couple I know has 5-10 years difference in age - age doesn't make a damned bit of difference in a relationship - maturity does.

The next time someone says something like that to you, tell them to go climb a rope - I'm serious.

well seeing as your only 19 people obviously assume that you need a "father figure in your life" because you chose a guy 6yrs older than you, which obviously shows you like older and maturer guys... but that doesn't matter, now i'm in no place to make a judgement on the age gap but as long as your happy...
forget what people say, dont live for them. live for you.

This is a part of life as you get older. People will always say negative things to make you feel unhappy. If your happy in your relationship don't worry about the sarcasm one may say to you.

People just like to be psychologists don't they? Actually nineteen and 25 is quite a nice gap because you're maturity levels are probably the same.

Pay them no attention. I used to hear the same thing and my boyfriend (who I am now married too) is 9 years older than I am. As long as your are happy, everyone else's opinion isn't worth a damn.

Well, it could also be that way because you ARE close to your dad...

You are looking for a relationship with a grown man when you are a teenager... There has to be a reason. You are in different stages so maybe you are mature for your age?
