He is an old dog about 8 years old, and is a free-spirit. (I wouldn't really replace him BTW).

This is a question I have been asked many times before. First let me give you some background on rolling in poop & other smelly things. Some say, there is no real reason why dogs do this. While others, like myself, believe they do it to mask their own smell. Dogs are decendents of wolves & wolves try to mask their scents to confuse prey. So dogs may do it for simalr reasons. No one really knows for sure.
As for stopping your dog from doing this strange behavior, I would say the best thing for you to do, is to watch what is in your yard or wherever your dog is finding these smelly things. If that is possible for you.Try to remember that you are working against instinct, here. It's not a learned behavior. I think getting rid of your dog is a bit harsh. Just try to keep a closer eye on him/her when they are outside. That way, if you see them lingering around something you think they may roll in, you can get their attention onto something more positive, like say, a ball or a rope toy. Something stimulating that the dog enjoys. That will give you time to clean up the smelly mess. Good luck!!

i'd guess the only way to stop him is to keep an eye on him while your out and pull him away when he tries to roll. if you do this enough times he should stop trying.

But i know it's not easy watchin a 'free spirit' whenever your out together. Maybe you should invest in some sort of cleaning cloth for a dog. i'm sure someone somewhere was mad enough to invent a baby wipe type thing for dogs. Or maybe you could use an actuel baby wipe to get rid of the pooh off his coat.

Hope you find a solution, i imagine its a real pain in the arss

This is a hold-over instinct from before dogs were domesticated.
They would roll around in a heavily scented object to mask their
own scent when hunting.

I think you need to come clean yourself. I just can't imagine what dog rolls in its own poo and under what circimstances would a dog be left to do it or have chance to do it of think of doing it at all.

Unfortunately, it is part of a dog's instinct to disguise their own scent in order to hunt other animals. The best way for to do this is to roll in poo.
