Lord Shiva’s cobra is symbolic of the Kundalini energy which lies at the base of the spine. When the Kundalini is awakened it travels upwards and opens the chakras or spiritual centers along the spine. The highest chakra at the top of the head represents Lord Shiva, the male aspect of God or the consciousness of the universe. The Kundalini represents the female aspect of God- Shakti or energy. The main goal in life is to merge Shakti with Shiva. Therefore the snake represents an avenue for attaining God. Any prayer which makes you feel more spiritually awakened will open your chakras more and will bring you closer to God. Lord Shiva is formless as represented by the lingam which is round. God does not want any elaborate mantras from us, although I’m not denying the power of mantras. If you have love in your heart for Lord Shiva, I think simple Lord Shiva mantras will do. What is most important to God is your devotion. He will feel your devotion and will bless you. Listen to Lord Shiva bhajans and feel him within your heart, or just say “Om Namah Shivaya.”

I just thought of a prayer to Lord Shiva which makes reference to him as Lord of snakes. I don't know if you know "Nagendra Haraya" If not, it's on the link I've included below.
