A kit car can be purchased all or in part unassembled or assembled by a independent shop if one does not have the skills or tools. Of the first car built and reproduced was the cyclecar, which Ford assembled and custom built for customers before WW1.
Today, most, if not all kit cars are are productions of popular manufactured vehicles. Due to federal manufacture regulations the cost of a manufactured vehicle cost more than a custom built kit vehicle! Additionally, because a manufactured vehicles built with the federal regulations that add more weight than necessary, besides expensive equipment which prevents good MPG a corporste design "one fits all" approach limits a customer's optional choices as to specific needs and purpose.
With a kit vehicle,,a person can build their own vehicle using only parts wanted to fit their needs for great fuel economy for less up front cost than a manufactured vehicle!
The photo below is a two seat kit car under construction, is a two seat with a driving range of 2400 miles using a motor rated at 150 MPG and a 16 gallon gas tank. Other fully enclosed versions are available for city commuting. Unassembled kits start at $6000.00. For those who lack the skill a local builder will contract and warrantee their workmanship. Also included is directions how to register and title your new vehicle. All kit vehicles are customizable! Assembled $12000.00 road ready and state safety inspected to be titled in the new owner's name! for more info. write to johnnyrockrohar@yahoo.com .

Basically, yes. But the kit refers to just the body parts and sometimes the chassis. It's a way to have a car that looks like an old car, with out the money of purchasing such a classic. One of the more popular kit cars I know of are the Cobra's.

A kit car is a car that is produced in small quantities and usually can be purchased in a kit for the purchasor to build. Normally thay are kits that are modeled after rare or expensive cars that can be built retatively cheap compared to buying the real car.

it's a frame of a car, and said kit goes on to it, most are complete minus interior. Like the fiero's are popular for lambo kits but still have the 4 cyl motor or what ever they have installed as a motor

Yes it is...kind of like a model car. You purchase it then assemble it. Most don't come with engine or transmission parts. Those are items you modify the frame of the car for.

Usually, you buy a 'glass body and mount it on an existing frame.
Note: the vast majority of "kit" cars are never finished by the guy/gal who started the project. It's not easy to build one, and make it streetable.

Yes... like they sell some "kit cars" that are replica's of exotic cars or old cars. Even once assembled they are still called a "kit car" because they are not authentic.
