it depends on how they are trying to strangle you:
if it's a front grab to the throat with the bare hands: bring your arms over the top of theirs with a sharp forceful strike downwards near the elbows and trap the arms close to your chest (this also works if they are straddling your waist and choking you on the ground).
this will take the pressure off from their grip but not completely, you can then knee strike (if standing) in the groin and use whatever technique you want to do afterwards, but I would suggest something to damage the knee so they have less mobility.
if you're on the ground; use the same technique but use your hips to roll them off to the side and while keeping their arms firmly trapped against your chest with one arm, use your free hand for a punch or palm strike to the face to give you time to get up and finish with a strike to the groin, or a damaging knee strike to hinder their mobility.
if it's from behind with bare hands, a stomp to the foot should give you a moment to grab the hands twist so that the palms are facing upward and pull forward over your shoulders to break the arms at the elbows and finish them off how you please to get away.
if you're being strangled by a rope, towel, or cord etc., try to lean forward and throw them over tucking your chin to your chest and rolling forward, or push hard backwards to put them up against a wall, if you can you can jab your fingers into their eyes or throat, or if you can gran the groin, do so and again do damage to the legs so it limilts their mobility to give you more time for escape.

There is already several great answers to your question about strangle hold defense or release.....I agree with most of the respected methods of various counters and such , however the smart-*** answers are pointless and ignorant....If you dont know about the Art then dont knock it......it works and has been around for thousands of years from all parts of Asia etc.....Fight with Honor!!

yeah, PLENTY. If you're interested in stuff like this try a defensive martial art like Judo, Hap Ki Do or Aikido. You'll learn many techniques that can save you from a strangle and more.

eyes and throat, poke um punch um tickle um do anything but do it fast and do it repeatedly until they let go.
believe it or not, depending on the intent of the man attacker a kick to the jewels might not work. if they are serious enough, their grip might weaken but it may not be enough to stop them.
put their eyesight at risk or put them in the same situation as you (crushing their larynx [throat]) would be the best way for an inexperienced fighter to ESCAPE the situation. the very next move, would be run and call the cops.

A couple. The most effective is a knee to the nads, hard. Ju Jit Su would be a decent place to start looking for a better move though, those guys are good at hurting people in close quarters.

If it is from the front you powerfully bring your hands straight up between their arms and then do a double elbow smash down on their arms. This should knock their hands off you throat.
From the rear you can try crushing their arch with the heel of your foot.

Turn your body sideways, then shoot your hand that is closet to your attacker up through his arms which are choking you. Then bring your elbow down hard on their arm/elbow.The person should come down and you can throw a couple of backfists to his face, then runaway.

Yes. You put both your arms up between his two arms and jerk upwards. Almost like you are throwing a humongous pie in the sky. This should break his grip. Don't forget a countermove or he may get you again. Run like the dickens.

If the person is behind you, tuck your chin tight against your chest and drop. If the person is in front of you, clasp your hands together and make strong upward thrusts against their forearms. In the case of a frontal assault, take advantage of their weaknesses. For female attackers, it is usally size. Run them over. For a male attacker, a few sharp knees to the testicles will generally spare your life.
