We all know who ultimately got the blame for them. But how did they actually start? Do you think your answer is biased? Is there another possibility?

I've heard a lot of different things, but as a whole it seems to me that the Church was defending Christian lands at first. That it was in fact the Moorish invaders that started the hostilities. I can't seem to get a strait historical account though. Anyone have any thoughts?

You're right.

The Moors or Saracens were the first ones who attacked Europe when they invaded and conquered Spain and Portugal beginning in A.D. 711 and attempted to spread the faith of Islam by the sword.

Rather like the fundamentalist Muslims are attempting to do today all over the world.

The Moors then attacked Gaul (France) in the year A.D. 722 and attempted to take the rest of Gaul in the year A.D. 732.

The man whose army defeated the Moors in October of A.D. 732 was Charles Marten who became known as Charles the Hammer for the war hammer he favored as his weapon of choice.

Charles the Hammer was the grandfather of Charles the Great who was also known as Charlemagne.

The Crusades came about as a direct result of attempting to free Christian lands from the Moorish invasion of Europe and to get the Holy Land under the control of Christianity.

A little side note here:

The word slave is derived from the Slavic peoples that were captured and sold by the Moors in places like Egypt and Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey).

Look on Wikipedia under Moors, the Moorish Invasion, etc.

Hope this helps.

The Muslims came bursting out of Arabia ~ 700 and conquered a lot of what was Byzantine Christian lands. They ruled them for ~300 years before the Crusades. For most of that time they had allowed Christian pilgrims to travel to the Holy Lands unimpeded. Then a caliph came to power who tore down Christian shrines and blocked the pilgrims from Europe. This was the cause of the first Crusade.

It was started by the Armorer's Guild, business was slow, let's send a bunch of hyped up knights and lackeys to the Holly Land to regain Jerusalem. Think of how much armor and how many weapons they will need. This, or any other money making scenario will work. You won't find it in the history books, but $$$ is the real reason, it always is.

I'm thinking that it was started by the church of England(possibly the pope), who got the rest of europe involved. They decided to go to the holy lands to take back what was "theirs" and the natives (muslims, moors) didn't quite like that idea. Therefore we have war. It was all about religion.
