do they get so mad when their ignorance is pointed out?

For example, in this question we have xtians stating that Paul wrote down what he heard Jesus say......UM excuse me...Paul never met Jesus! Paul was not an apostle!

Why don't they at least study and know their own faith?!?

It's quite irritating to me.

I REALLY want to know. If you are going to bet your life and eternal soul on something why would you not want to know everything you possibly could about it? Why would you get mad at someone pointing out something you didn't know?

Um...Paul wrote ACTS...of course he is going to say that he was "personally commissioned". We have political and religious leaders doing that today.

Saul/Paul met a "light" on the road to Damascus, not the living Jesus. He could have been high you know. His teachings sure do differ from that of Jesus too.

I'm sorry you've had this experience with Christians. I'm a first year theology student and I've found there is so much more to the Christian faith than what I knew before I started studying.
I think part of the problem is that some people call themselves Christians just because they go to church twice a year and aren't part of any other religion. These people really know very little about the Christian faith. I think another part of the problem is that many churches tend to cater for "seekers" (that's people who are looking for answers to life's questions), and aren't so big on actually building up people who are already Christians. I think there is a huge need for churches to get into more detail and go deeper theologically in their teaching.
And like others have mentioned, we're not perfect people. Christians should not be getting mad when others point out our mistakes. I'm really sorry that you experienced this kind of behavior from Christians. I agree with you that Christians need to learn more about their faith.

Ok, the question here is not whether or not Paul was an apostle. The question you raise is why Christians don't know about their own faith. Well, there are alot of people in this world who think that because we claim to be Christians, we're claiming to be perfect. We aren't. Like all people, Christians are at different places in their journey. In other words, some Christians are more knowledgeable than others because they have studied longer or have been Christians longer. This does not make those who don't know all of the answers or know whether or not Paul was an apostle, ignorant. It just means they haven't learned yet. And, just for your information. Paul was an apostle and he did meet Jesus. Jesus even confronted Paul, asking him why he continued to persecute Him. So, you might want to learn a bit more before you start questioning others' knowledge. Good luck in your journey and God bless. The book of Acts largely chronicles Paul's life.

cpt emily pretty much sums it up. There is an ever growing gap between the academic community and the lay community in the Christian religion. Many Christain people tend to repeat what they've always been taught without looking into Biblical scholarship, theology, church history, etc., and so are ignorant of their own faith tradition. Most churches, especially the newer mega churches, do a terrible job of educating their congregations. There is no reason that Christian people should not be exposed to a rudimentary knowledge of historical, literary, redaction, etc. criticism of the Bible, the basics of church history, and classical/contemporary theology. Unfortunately, what most people want today is for a pastor or Christian leader to give feel good, self help type of messages or teachings. Academic knowledge is threatening and often ignored because it challenges the long held beliefs of many Christian people.

Hopefully this trend will change, but it doesn't look like it will in the near future.

Paul met Jesus in The Spirit while on the road to Damascs... he then spent some time in the desert being instructed by The Holy Spirit. Paul was The Last Apostle.. his commision was from Jesus directly which is the only way one could be an Apostle... his statement of authority from Jesus was confirmed by the Apostles in Jerusalem.

And for your information The Faith of Those of The True Christian Faith is based on Truth of God's promise in The Truth of Their Salvation... not on The Bible or any man's interpritation there of... The relationship between God and His people is one-on-one and personal. It is in God we Trust... not The Bible.

The Bible of The Christian Faith is not intended for those who are not of The Faith... it is only with the leading of The Holy Spirit that understanding of God's Word and Will can be found in The Bible.

You can not possably "know" The Bible as you are clearly not of The Faith.... The "study" of The Bible is more than a lifetime effort... no one of The True Christian Faith wouold make the claim that they "knew" The bible..implying that they had full understanding... No one in mortal flesh dose.

Perhaps you should read Acts 9:3-8, 22:6-11, 26:12-18. He was commissioned by Jesus himself

1) Not all Christians are that uninformed. Yes, one would hope people would know better before speaking up, but we all know that it happens.

2) Some people get mad when they are proved wrong because no one likes to admit they are wrong. Sometimes people get mad because the person pointing out the error is extremely rude about it.

3) Why does this irritate you? Do you dislike ignorance or just Christianity? Which leads me to...

4) I find it lazy at best and rude at worst to call us "x"tians.

Paul was an apostle. He became one in Acts 13:47."For so hath the Lord commanded us (Paul & Barnabas), saying, I have set thee to be a light of the gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.
