i want to save the installed programmes for backup

just drag it to the destination folder, and if you install the software onto the removable disk, depending on the software, you cant use it on another computer without installing it on there too, like photoshop or zonealarm for instance

back up - use ntsbackup facility (I assume you have xp)
In XP Pro standard in xp home you must download it.
check google : ntsbackup
download install it.
Then backup whatever you want (I propose complete drive)
maybe large but you dont miss out anything !
When you want to install just go to restore and do as insturcted by program.

Software to copy from harddisk is incomplete, unless you burn
(or copy from original file /optical drive)

right-click on it, then go to properties, and see if it's Read Only or Write-Protected. If it is, and you can deselect this option, then you can copy it.

You also have to have administrative rights to the OS (if it's something like Win2K or 2K3 or XP) - make sure you're using a profile with those rights.

just click and drag from file to the floppy or {A}drive
