Take him to a paediatric dentist.
He will only be scared if he sees that you are scared. Although you may have had trauma in the past, it will only unecessarily upset your son if you transmit these fears to him. A 3-year-old is going to have a general anaesthetic, so he won't have problems anyway. It's the kindest way.
It is extremely rare that your son has no enamel on his teeth. It is more likely due to hygiene and diet problems causing the decay.
1. An adult must brush his teeth 2x a day.
2. Offer him only water and milk to drink. Keep away from juices, cordials, soft drinks etc.
3. Try to only feed him at regular mealtimes, with no snacks in-between. If you feel the need to give him a snack, try raw vegetables or a piece of fruit.

make sure you take him to a pediatric dentist ( dentist that cares for children)
they deal with this all the time and your son will not feel more pain than what he is probably dealing with now. it would be your best move. your sons second set of teeth wont come in for a couple more yrs so thats a long time for him to feel this way.

There are tons of pediatric dentists available (depending on where you are). You need to take your son immediately! You aren't doing him any favors by YOU being afraid! Part of being a parent is being brave for your children - NOW do your JOB and get him to a dentist PRONTO!!

If he has no enamel on his teeth, then they are very weak and discolored.
Who cares if he is too scared! It's for his own good. What else could you do BESIDES going to a dentist anyway?
