Its quite a simple equation really, burn less callories than you eat and you get fat. Burn more callories than you eat and you get thin.

Simple equation yes that is true. But you see, there is a pleasure in eating that you could not explain, some habits which seem difficult to change, some addiction uneasy to quit. You see eating is not just for survival reasons. Will anyone tolerate being starved from eating prohibition?- Maybe there are some who do but really it is easier just to eat and..... never mind rather than restricting yourself from "saliva-inducing" yummy foods for the sake of keeping fit and slim.

if it was really that easy, do you think 70% of Americans would be overweight or obese? Come on now, there are deep reasons behind why people overeat, that unless they are deal with, people won't permanently change their ways.

Did you know that over 98% of diets fail, in that people gain the weight back eventually. People can't just change their eating habits overnight, especially if they have had these habits all their life. It's very true, that for some people food has become an addiction and like any other addiction, it is not easy to overcome.

I'm not even overweight, but I know this much, you need to have a little more compassion. Take care : )

Compulsive eaters suffer from a psychological disorder. Just like anorexics, and bulimics. You can't just "shake that off." That's like asking an epileptic to just "quit having seizures." It is usually a deeply emotional torment from past pain and they need encouragement and support, not critical punks who don't know what they are talking about dissing them. Grow up and be respectful, because you may be in a support group with one someday when you get really depressed about the fact that your trousers now have to be special ordered because you were ok with getting fat.

you cant just stop eating. Im not fat but im looking at it from a scientific p.o.v. and normally fat people have stretched their stomachs to the point where they need to eat more to feel less hungry. Thats why its usually hard for a heavier person to start a diet because they are in the midst of shrinking there stomach while hunger pain are sometimes what seem to be uncontrolable.

A serious answer to your question?

When you are over weight you tend to have a poor body image and therefore a poor self esteem. Often the only thing that has given you comfort in the past is food - things that are really fattening like chocolate, mashed potato, cakes... Therefore, you eat more to try and feel better but it only makes it worse. To be hungry is to feel hollow and empty and leave you vulnerable to feelings of fear and self hatred.

It is not a matter of stopping eating, it is a matter of changing a persons view of life and food. I appreciate the logic of your statement and if only it were that easy.

Having an appetite for sweets and fast food gets you fat, not from just from eating too much.

Because when you cut down on meals or stop eating, your body goes into "starvation" mode and conserves the fat, making it difficult to lose.

Some people have medical conditions, like severe thyroid problems which cause them to gain/retain weight even though they don't overeat.
