There are very many different ways to meditate and I believe each one of us must find what works for us as individuals. I have a few different ways I like to meditate. Alot depends on why I'm meditating at the moment. If I'm meditating to spend time with God, I get very quiet, taking deep breaths, closing my eyes and whispering, "Jesus" very quietly over and over until I feel my mind is clear. Then I talk with Him or just stay very quiet, listening for the Holy Spirit.
Other times, I just want to meditate to relieve stress and I will sit in the middle of the woods around my house, again, doing some deep breathing, getting very quiet and just listening to nature.
Then, there are times when I play music, close my eyes and just concentrate on a beautiful, peaceful image.
It's all very different for everyone. Whatever works for you is right. There is no right or wrong to meditation. Good luck and God bless.

Lie down or sit with your back supported. Make sure you are 100% comfortable. Close your eyes and either choose a sound to concentrate on (the everpresent 'ohm') or concentrate on your breathing. Think only about your breathing... in.... out. Count if you would like. Try to make it so that this is the ONLY THING you have in your mind. Breathing in.... out. It's okay to fall asleep during meditation, as long as you've cleared your mind first. You'll know how to tell when you experience it. Also, amethyst can aid in meditation: place a piece on your third eye (forhead), or even just hold it or put it on your lap while you meditate.
You can purchase tapes like pathwalkings to help meditation, or some self-help techniques are good. I learned some pain management techniques in biofeedback that were very helpful for staying calm.

Lie or sit down with nothing crossed and spine straight, face your palms towards the air (there is a scientific reason for this, I just cant seem to remember it) and close your eyes. There are many types of meditation, my favorite is visualization meditation. Imagine a relaxing scenel, it can be anything you find pleasing then as you become more immersed in the relaxation your others senses may begin to work and you will be completely immersed in your scene.
At first it may be plain but with practice this can be very enjoyable.

Lie on the ground
Try and make a circular breath with NO break between inhale and exhale. Make it smooth and circular.
Work on that.
Work on that and listen to the world.
Listen to the outside.
Let the outside inside.
How far do you hear
200 feet
500 feet
1000 feet
Do you hear the birds in the trees
Do you hear the toilets 400 feet away flushing.
keep your breath circular
Slow it down as much as you can
Slowly slow the breathing down
relax
close your eyes
listen to the outside
make the breath go from inhale to exhale with no break, no heistation.
Make the breath a part of you
Your breath is loud and near you, but you can't hear it for the birds 1000 feet away who chirp so loudly you can almost see them in your head
Do you hear people walking on the sidewalks outside
Do you hear cars turning down the streets before your house
Breath, listen, experience
If someone walks into your area you should hear them, feel them. When they speak it should not disturb you. Their voice should be as loud as the birds 1000 feet away.
You should be aware of the flys in your house
You should hear them, know where they are.

Go to see a qualified meditation instructor that you personally feel comfortable with. This is the best way to learn to meditate.
In general, one of the best ways to clear the mind of negativity is to recognise that the mind always wants to be occupied. A simple but powerful and effective technique is to use the activity of the mind by thinking about one's good fortune and imagining that it is being shared and growing as it is shared so that everyone has your good fortune. At the same time everyone's misfortune and unhappiness dissolves away and is replaced by good fortune.
The idea is to occupy your mind with the task of imagining everyone's happiness. This helps to clear your mind of negativity.
To learn to meditate skillfully requires the personal attention of a qualified teacher. Let's hope we all encounter one.

Find a nice quite place, sit "comfortably"(preferably in a upright position with hands on your legs, palms up)
Take in a deep breath, breathing in threw the nose and exhale out your mouth, do this 3 times.
Then just sit and let the thoughts go by, do not try to recognize them, or analyze them just let them go.
Stay relaxed and comfortable.
At first would suggest not doing this any longer than 15 min. to start...then increase your time as you get more comfortable, like adding 5 min. to your time every time you get comfortable
This is the easiest way I know how to tell someone over the net in such a short space.
If you have any other questions do not be afraid to IM or E-mail me.

Study anything you can about zen. The best way to start is by facing a wall and looking at a spot concentrating on only breath in...breath out. If thoughts come, let them come and when you return to breathing thought flows away. You should find time to do this everyday for about 20-30 mins.
