The lithosphere is the crust and the uppermost portion of the mantle. Its purpose is to provide a ride that enables plate tectonics to occur. Its effect is to build mountains, destroy oceanic crust, and to generally terrorize the inhabitants of the Planet Earth through earthquakes and their resultant tsunamis.
