Parakeets can eat ANY seeds. They do best on a mix intended for them but as cockatiel seed is full of parakeet sized seeds there is nothing to worry about.

As a former breeder of small birds it is necessary for me to advise you that ALL birds NEED live greens. Broccoli, kale, collards, parsley, brussels sprouts.. live corn, frozen peas...no celery, NO ONIONS... or iceberg lettuce (too much water).

Grit is NOT necessary for any parrot (hookbill)

The problem with giving a parakeet cockatiel food is that the food itself may be too big for a parakeet to break down and eat. Thus, your parakeet may actually "starve to death". If there are small enough pieces in the cockatiel food for a parakeet to break down enought o be able to eat, it will not hurt the parakeet for a day.

I have 3 cockatiels, an Amazon Parrot, 2 parakeets, and a guinea pig. I do mix the birds' food so that they can pick and choose what they want. (Even the guinea pig gets some of the birds' food..lol)

You won't have a problem, but it would be better if you converted your bird to a pellet diet. Pellets are specially forumlated to ensure your bird gets all the nutrients and vitamins it needs to be healthy. Seeds are like McDonald Big Macs - they taste great and the birds love them, but they will shorten the lifespan and ultimately are not great.

But for now, there's almost no difference between cockitiel and parakeet food.

It won't hurt the bird, but for the Best health, you should work on converting your birds over to a pelet food source.

The problem with a all seed diet is that it's not nutritionally compleat, and the birds will pick & eat the higher fat seads, and this can reduce there lifespan.

With a pellet food source, they get a better diet.

The birds will simply pick out the food they want and leave the rest. Cage birds should get no more than 10% of their diet as seeds. It is basically junk food.

Nothing, the parakeets just pick and chose the pieces of feed they want and can eat.

Nothing is wrong with that - my cockatiel (Elton) loves/prefers parakeet food and my parakeet loves/prefers the cockatiel food. They have the same hookbill structure.

A good idea would be to call the pet store and ask them if it will hurt. I would think that it wouldn't, but parakeets are so tiny... you need to be sure. Let us know what you learn. :)
