I'm 24, and when I try to go to bed it usually takes me hours to fall asleep, and when I do, I find it extremely hard to wake up, somtimes I dont even hear the alarm. This has caused me to have a terrible biological clock, and my intire life for that matter. This has been going on for a couple of years, I tried the whole doing sports befor sleep, not drinking coffee or coke 4 hours prior to sleep, and I somtimes took the advise of a doctor telling me to try out panadol night or some cough syrup that would help me sleep, but it didnt help...does anyone have any good advice on what to do, or a website that could give me some good info? truly appreciated

There are a couple of factors that could be contributing to your sleeping habits that you may not have thought of...
First off, make sure that the ONLY thing you do in bed is sleep. A lot of people will read or watch tv on, or in, bed... and this is a NO NO.... it makes you believe that when you are laying down, that it is not alright to sleep... if you want to watch tv, or read, do it in a chair with ample lighting or in another room entirely... Devote your bed for ONLY sleeping. That way, when you know you are tired, you don't feel distracted by the habit of doing "something else" while in bed
Second off, the reason you might not be able to fall asleep is not because of any schedule or what you ate, it might be that you are on a BAD mattress. Have you ever flipped it over? Is it time to buy a new one (they need to be replaced every 6-10 years, ya know)?? the problem may really be that simple....
I'm not gonna discredit all the other suggestions people have made, they ARE right... these are a just a few to consider, along with them
Hope you get some sleep!

If you exercise before bed this could overstimulate your brain just as watching TV, playing video games and working on the computer can. Exercise can help with sleep but only if done during the day.
Also, if you are constantly worrying or thinking about the next day this could be a problem. When I am doing this, I take a sheet of paper and write down my worries on it. It get it all out and then I can sleep.
Check out this website for pointers.

If these don't help do see a doctor. Lack of sleep can begin to effect you medically in time if it is not taken care of.

First I wouldn't trust a doctor who would tell me to try cough syrup or anything wacky to get me to fall asleep. Try looking in the yellow pages or in your city/town for a sleep clinic. They usually research why people can't fall asleep and may even be able to help. Go to another doctor elsewhere, get a second opinion, ask if you should go to a sleep clinic.

well it could be your schedule . people say you are supposed to go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday. Even on the weekends. try that and maybe you will get straightened around. I do not know about the pills ? I would try a natural remedy !

refrain from drinking too much caffeine, that is bad for your health, also, it lets you sleep very late. then i advice you to drink milk instead, before going to bed. then never worry about anything, or about anyone. these will help you get some sound sleep.:)
