I weigh 285lbs.

Do I need to go further, or is that ok?

That is fine, but you may want to make it a continuous jog. Work into it, though

Depends on how your knees are holding out. At that weight, jogging any further than that will risk damage.

You are certainly on the right track. My hat is off to anyone capable of sustaining any sort of fitness program.

You may want to increase the distance once or twice a week, by half a mile or so when the weather is particularly nice, or you are feeling particularly good.

You may also want to consider some other form of aerobic exercise that is a little lower impact. My favorite is bicycling. I think it is more the psychological effect of feeling like I am getting farther and faster, but been doing it now going on three years, and the joints are, if anything, better than when I started. I even rode this morning in the rain, but will not be willing to do that when the rain turns cold.

In seriousness, the distance you walk and the ok/not ok status of that is between you and your physician. If you are really consistent in doing this, it seems like the physician should be pleased with that. There are just too few details to give you a thumbs up or thumbs down.

Congrats! I honor you for your work, keep it up.

2.5 miles is a very good distance, even for "sporty" people. Doctors usually recommend a minimum of 20 minutes if you jog - the time it takes for the exercise to start being effective on the heart rates and other bodily functions! - and I would say a minimum of 30 to 45 mins if you only brisk walk.
The difference is that you should burn more calories by jogging; however brisk walking is an excellent start if you find it difficult / boring to run.
Ultimately, whatever way, the distance you mention should be good to stay in shape.

I think that is a great start! Congratulations. I think you should try to gradually work up to one consecutive hour of brisk walking with some jogging thrown in to get your heart rate up (like interval training) most days of the week. Then, you will have an ideal exercise program as long as you also include some stretching and a little weight training. Also, be careful of what you eat because I often eat extra calories when I exercise and then actually gain weight, when I'm not vigilant. Good luck to you and enjoy your walks!

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.

On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.

Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

If you work up to jogging six miles in an hour you will really take pounds off and feel great. Use some good running shoes like New Balance

Yes that is a good start, but the next step is to start eating less and healthier. I am assuming that you are overweight if you weigh 285 and you didn't mention your height and build type. If you are 6' 10" and have a muscular build then you might not be overweight?

That is an excellent way to stay in shape, as long as you do it 3-4 times a week and keep up with it, that is great!! Good Job!! Go Captain....Go Captain....LOL.

That's a good cardiovascular work out but if you really want to get in shape you need to add some weights.
