For me it's because it's really the core of my being, God is I mean. When people are ignorant or rude, including other Christians, my heart starts flaming, hehe :)

I think the only way it stirs up fierce emotions is if one is not really secure in their thinking.. A little study and research dispels the myth that faith lacks reason.. The truth is actually the opposite.. but folks find it hard to find the time to do the study and research.. Even though it takes not that much really.. Research, and a percentage of the life being contemplative.. All questions can be easily answered.. here's an example - scoffers say the four gospel accounts differ, so cannot be truth. The Truth is, aLL eye witness accounts differ.. yes? And what is the conclusion when they don't? The answers are so easy.. It's just the untruths are said, printed, etc, over and over, and over.. [Here's another one - geneologies in the bible differ in some small details - Geneologies, likely came from the records of men, bound to be indiscrepencies. The bible was "inspired by God" - Not all of it "dictated by God, word for word"..

Its only Islam that has problems, everybody else gets along. They say dont take jew or christian as freind, its in there koran and say convert by the sword.Until you all grab this and what there ways are your eyes and ears will stay shut.If a jew was to marry a catholic i dont think there would be mutch problems but if a christian would marry a muslim woman and not change to islam? could result in murder. The pope the other day was right what did that profit of islam bring that had not allready been said by Jesus some 100s of years before him?I will tell you he said after repeating all Jesus works,KILL ALL NONE BELIEVERS.Thats when the sead of evil was planted. So untill the truth reach everyones ears and minds,Islam not RELIGION stir up the emotions fierce. Jehad where is holly war in the Bible? Only in the Koran.

Wow, a lot of good answers all ready. I am not religious so I don't understand all the fuss. What I don't understand is why religious people are so intolerant of people who aren't like them. Christians say they are forgiving, but ask them about abortion or gay marriage and watch them go off. Whatever happened to live and let live. It is the religious issues that have kept the problems going on in the Middle East. I don't see an end to it either.
When I say I am not religious, it does not mean that I don't try to be nice and have respect for others.

Some people's life views revolve around religion. They don't like being reminded that not everyone agrees with them because that means they **may** be wrong. If they're wrong they might not experience the afterlife that they expected -- or worse -- there may be no afterlife at all. A world without me?! Impossible!

It all stems from insecurity. If one is secure in one's beliefs one is not angered/upset by descending viewpoints.

In my opinion it's because religion, unlike other things like politics, is something in which the person believes in totally and without question. I.e. it is the basis of their lives, with religion there is no room for debate

It starts with parents. You grow up believing in a fairy tale versions of religion where Jesus is like a Barney figure who loves animals and children and sings "i love u, u love me, were one perfect family"...but then at some point u learn that the bible is filled with both inspirational and attrocious stories whether or not it is good or bad, you just feel like you've been duped.

Because religion is a deeply personal, real thing for most people. Everyone has different views on it and they tend to guard them jealously. In fact, to some people their religion is a part of them, an extension of themselves as it were. And when you question one's faith, you question their whole existense.

It's what many people base some major decisions in their lives on, and minor decisions as well, from who to vote for to how to treat neighbors to what to wear to whom one can marry or date. To the religious, you're talking about who created this earth and us. That's worth some emotion, right?

It hurts people that love the Lord, to hear people scoff at his sacrifice that was for everyone. Some people actually understand what sort of suffering the Lord put himself through to show his love for the undeserving and it does bring on strong emotions.
