I have sisterlocks...they were done and are retightened with a tool. This is a never ending process since my hair is so thick and my locs so small. But My hubby has traditional locs...I palm roll his roots when they start to grow out about 1/2 inch, sometimes longer when I can't make him sit.

I occasionally put my hair into small twists (with a little hair oil, and finished with a protein gel). Because I feel compelled to wash my hair more often than when it is braided, it lasts only about a month. Also, the strands are more easily loosened than when in braids (I'm sure it stays much more firmly in locks, but that style is too permanent for me, as I enjoy both braided and straightened styles as well).
