I believe that it was a test of his faith to strengthen it. Abraham was close to God, and when asked to slay Isaac, he did not hesitate. Since Isaac was a promised child, Abraham could have had the thought that Isaac was the messiah. Wether he thought that he was the promised mesiah or not, he did believe that God could raise him from the dead or at least give him another son.

He was testing Abraham's faith. Isn't it funny that God did so by asking him to offer his only son as a sacrifice. Which is exactly what God did for us. Could you do that, could I? I hope He never asks this of me, and if He does; I hope I can be as faithful as Abraham.

There are two sides to this story, some religions say that Issac was the one who was supposed to be sacrificed, and others say that it was Ishmael.
You can't really answer that until you know who really was on the chopping block.

Obedience is no virtue if, in so obeying, it causes you to commit evil. If I were a god, I'd have a lot more respect for someone who stood up for what was morally right, even at the risk of his own damnation, than I would for someone who would blindly commit any atrocity someone told him to....
