You need a good clarifying shampoo that removes rust and other impurities.
You need to go to a beauty salon and get maybe Malibu 2000, nexxus Aloe Rid, Paul Mitchell 3. You can get the Malibu 2000 at Sallys Beauty Supply.
When you use a clarifying shampoo you want to make sure you follow w/ a good moisturizing conditioner because the clarifiers do tend to dry out the hair.
Good Luck!

We live in the country and use well water, so I am constantly having rust issues with all of our hair. That is untill I got a water softener, that stopped all the rust rings in the tub and funky hair colors. But to get that color out of her hair, I had to go to a salon and bought a bottle of shampoo called Nexxus Rust Rid. That worked good.

Best way to remove it is perm solution. Go to the drugstore and buy a perm. Run the solution through the hair. It will react and turn purple, the hair won't though, don't worry. It works very quickly and effectively. It won't be damaging to the hair, it will only be on for a minute or two. Then wash and condition the hair, but not in the same water as you have.

Unfortunately, there isn't a way to remove a metallic dye. The only thing that can be done is to cover the yellow with another color.
Normally, adding the opposite on the color wheel will help neutralize the offending color. The opposite of yellow is blue. However, too much blue would make your mother look like Marge Simpson and so it would be best to see a hair stylist who specializes in color correction.
However, adding red or brown would be easier to make your mother's hair look more natural. Most hair color products have a scale on the packaging to show you what that product would look like on different shades of hair. It wouldn't be difficult to find one that would be subtle enough for your mother.
