When he is ready. Boys typically train later than girls, and my little boy was almost 3 before he showed interest and we started to potty train. Because we waited on him though and when he was ready it only took two weeks! I think 17 months might be a little too young, but every child is different so just get your cues from him.

Unfortunately there is no ideal age to begin potty training skills. Watch for potential signs that he is ready. When he wakes up dry from nap time, has a vocabulary developed enough to have words for toilet, urinate, and bowel movement, and he has expressed some interest in what goes on in the bathroom, then he will be at his ideal age. I have potty trained my own 4 kids plus numerous other children in my 20 years as a licensed daycare provider. Each child is different, but my experience has shown that closer to 3 is the age most kids are really able to work on it and become truly potty trained.

When the child is ready. But this is a nice age to introduce the potty. Allow child to sit for a few minutes at least two to three times per day and increase time as weeks goes bye. Get a good book on potty training and read to child while on the potty. Make this experience fun for the child.

as a mumof 4 i would introduce him to the potty now. there will be a few accidents so but some trainer pants. its a frustrating task but after baby has soiled himself a few times he'll get the ideaof what its all about. reward and praise him for every succesful visit to the potty and youll find it will all just fall into place

When he's ready and in the summer are probably the best suggestions. Usually around 2 - 2 1/2 but some slightly earlier and some later.
The summer is best because they can run around outside with no bottoms on and see what's going on - saves washing pants and clothes!

my daughters 20 months- i've had a potty in the bath room for a while now- she sits on it before she has a bath - sometimes we are lucky- sometimes "dolly" has a wee on the potty- so we all clap- just to get her used to it!! - really pick a week to start ( preferably summer) put a little pair of pants on him- if you have a picture on them - say don't wee on noddy etc and let him go- once you start don't give up- but really unless he's uncomfortable in nappies I think hes a bit young yet! good luck!!

If he's not interested don't force him. I tried to make my son use the potty at 20 months when he wasn't ready. We got there in the end but I'm sure it would have been quicker had he been ready

Boys generally later than girls, but usually a good time is around 2 half give or take a few months. Don't try to early or you'll be messing around for months and if a child is not ready themselves showing interest/acknowledging you can scare them force them to hold it in causing bladder infections/constipation.
