Recentley the transmission started to slip. It will go as high as 2nd gear and then it revs real high and won't go faster then 35 mph before it slips completley out of gear. I took it to an auto parts store and they checked all fluids and said they were fine and then ran a diagnostic test on it. It came up with a P750 indicating that it was the shift soleniod malfunctioning. And when I asked them what the symtoms of a malfunctioning shift soleniod were they described everything that was happening with my car. They sounded pretty accurate. But when I called around to find someone to fix it they all said it was probley more then just the shift soleniod. I don't want to get ripped off and have someone tell me that there's more problems then there really are, but, I also want my car fixed. Do I believe the guy at the auto parts store or some rip-off mechanic?

Find a mechanic you can trust (check with friends, etc...) and let him diagnose and correct the problem. Trying to diagnose a problem yourself and then getting someone else to fix it is maddening for both you and the mechanic you hire. The auto parts store may be able to recommend a trustworthy soul for you.

Best of luck!

Ok lets see, Are we gonna take the word of a mechanic who's been doing it for years and years (but he's a rip off) or some kid at the auto parts store than was probably flipping burgers last year at McDonalds (who by the way except for his job and computer screen don't know crap about cars).... hum let me think about that......

The symptoms he described are pretty accurate espcially if he was reading them from his printout... On those transmissions, the code can say that there is a fault with the solenoid but unknown why.. something else could have sent trash after it failed into the solenoid to cause it to mess up? Something else is failing and when the transmission didn't sense the shift it set the code?

Basically codes are guides and not a fix all... You may have a solenoid or even something stupid as a wire that has gone bad inside the transmission causing the concern.. but until you pull the pan off and inspect for damage, it's a guessing game sorry

It could very well be just a small solenoid that needs replacing. The mechanic will not know for sure until replaces it. Because you have been driving the car with a bad solenoid, it had not been shifting properly and you could have damaged something else internally. Some transmissions are worth rebuilding when opening them up to replace just one thing. A thorough work through should be done if you are already taking the time to take it off the car to get to the inside of it (lots of labor). Just my $0.02. But doing so will cost a lot more than that.

Unless you are a mechanic you will have to take it somewhere. What they probably meant was that something else caused that part to go bad or that that part could now have caused other stuff to go bad because you have been driving around in this car, doing more damage when you should have taken it in to begin with. Make sure the shop is ASE certified and check out their rating on the BBB website. Make sure they are a member of the BBB.

i know a lot about cars and if i were u.. i would get a different car.. fords break down more then the average car. never buy a ford. But if anything i would take the car to another shop to get it diagnosed.. to make sure. once u do get it fixed either trade it in and get a reliable car such as a honda, toyota or if u prefer american cars get a chevy. or just sell your car. but trust me, u will have a lot less problems with another car. Good luck
