I have eliminated caffine & chocolate, but find there has to be some other food causing my symptoms. IBS is the problem but what else can I stop eating?

Certain foods are known to stimulate gut reactions in general, and in those with IBS eating too much of these might influence or worsen symptoms. For example, meals that are too large or high in fat, fried foods, coffee, caffeine, or alcohol may provoke symptoms of abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Eating too much of some types of sugar that are poorly absorbed by the bowel (e.g., sorbitol, commonly used as a sweetener in many dietetic foods, candies, and gums; and fructose, also used as a sweetener and found naturally in honey as well as some fruits) can also cause cramping or diarrhea. Some foods are gas producing (e.g., beans, cabbage, legumes, cauliflower, broccoli, lentils, Brussels sprouts, raisins, onions, bagels) and eating too much may cause increased gaseousness, particularly since IBS can be associated with retention of gas and bloating.

I have found if I take alot of fiber I can eat almost anything. I take the metamusil capsules and benefiber powder in anything you drink. There is no cure so you are your own best judge of what works for you. The do make prescription meds but they didnt work for me. I hope you find relief soon. You might try keeping a food diary for a month and keep track of when you have episodes and what you ate that day then go through the act of elimination.

IBS runs in my family. Everyone has sensitivity to different things. Some common ones: wheat (gluten), dairy, green fruits, broccoli, cauliflower, and acidic foods. I'm not saying these might be your problem but try eliminating one or two a week, and see what happens.

Things that are acidic like tomatoes, pasta sauce, lemons, limes, oranges. Dairy is often a problem. Some of my friends who have IBS also avoid things like broccoli, spinach, green fibrous vegetables, asparagus, nuts, etc. I wish you luck - IBS is no fun.
