whoa! loaded but interesting idea - and very different than what i have come to think. I have worked in the food business for over 20 years and have worked with some master cooks who are male, but when hiring - and this applies to experience in several countries, i find that woman seem to have more sensitive taste buds and put more effort into developing a recipe to as close to perfection as they can. Perhaps the female sense of smell and taste has more capacity, not really sure. Also woman cooks seem to be better at menu composition. They tend to error less in creating the "one note" menu -- where every item is rich or hitting the same relative flavor note. Woman have also seemed more open and curious to learning new things regardless of other workers rank. These impression are over-generalizations, but my experiences have added up to give this general perception.
For each statement above --there have been many exceptions. I think male cooks often appear to have more confidence - and sell themselves as experts more easily than female cooks (and sometimes this can be a good thing, and sometimes not so good.) Male cooks are also are stronger physically and can sometimes perform better because of their long term stamina. I think a mix of male and female cooks (or just a mix of people working to their strengths) make up the best mix in a professional kitchen. I know from a media standpoint - our idea of the "Chef" is prototypically a male. I once saw a professional female chef be asked to let a male student stand in for her in a promotional photo for a cooking program -- since a male image seemed more "chef-like."

Note: Just have to say i love Ria's answer below...Ha!

Sexist, no..It does make for an interesting converstation....I can only speak for myself and coming from a family of great male cooks..Its pride & passion for food. When I first got married I was by far the best cook in the house and it was hard for me to "let" my wife cook cause, I admit I was picky and wanted it done my way. After giving up the fight and now she's a stay at home Mom..(I know how dare I religate her to those duties...how sexist) She now cooks great and cooks almost 90% of the time. I'm the grill cook and the weekend cook and I love to watch cooking channels. To her is a "duty", to me its fun and I want to make everything I make perfect. Now for the Holiday we share duties, I make the big stuff (some fancy main dish) and she does the basics. I love it. If I had to do it all the time I may change my view on topic.

I am a female chef and I cook better than most men (if not all) that i've known (keep in mind that the majority of men i know are also chefs.) I know a lot of women don't like to cook but you can't speak for all of us.

I am a man and I "love" to cook. My girlfriend (live-in) doesn't know how to cook. But that doesn't matter. I also enjoy shopping at the market. I guess I know what I like and when I want it. I don't have to guess what's for dinner. I enjoy trying new things,,,,not too complicated, just different. I guess it's just fun. Like one of the other responders said, women think they are expected to cook so don't enjoy it as much.

What a horrifyingly sexist question!

There’s absolutely no evidence on which to base your claim that men who like to cook are better than women cooks—therefore, your question is invalidated.

Shame on you.

Possibly because men cook who like to cook. Women often do it because they think it is expected of them.

This is a loaded question! But in general men eat more than women and I think that if I wanted to know how to do something I would ask a person who does it more often. e.g. I would go to a plumber for plumbing questions and not an accountant!

I am a man who loves to cook, my girlfriend can not cook and does not want to. Women feel compelled to have to do the cooking and so do not want to. Men just do it to enjoy it and therefore do a better job. Also men love to eat, women hate to love to eat.

Although some women like to cook, percentage-wise more men wouldn't do UNLESS they liked it.

that is so not true i am a Chef for Disney and i know many Women Chefs who are great in the kitchen hands down -- I believe its a passion --- not a gender --- when you find something you really like to do you become better at it -- think about it
