I don't know but I've heard it from friends in the industry many times - that it's almost always the way it is.

I hate to say it but I've experienced it as being true. I've waited tables and although I myself am black and whenever I go out make it a point to tip well over that is which required (because I know how hard it is) tip generously - way more than the taxes together.

THe answer lies in not only an racial stereotype but also the fact that depending on where you're from, Black patrons are of a lower socio-economic social class than most Whites (not all). However if the service is bad i.e. laden with attitude for no reason why in the world would someone leave a good tip, not even my WHite friends leave a good tip, not just Blacks. Perhaps the source of this joke is that ALL Balck people are poor, rather it is more a matter of we spend our money more carefully because a lot of us were not born into money.

These are the main two that I know of, but just keep in mind that even White celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Tom Cruise are bad tippers (perezhilton.com)

Ciao and bon appetite

I've been to Washington, D.C., and I have heard such things myself. I myself tip on a scale such as this: 25% or more for great service, 15 -18% for average service, 14-10% for fair, sincere service, and 0- a serious tongue-lashing complaint for horrible service.

Haven't those people ever wondered that maybe it's the waiter himself who possibly provides bad service in which the black customer responds by providing a bad tip?

It may depend upon the place of business that waiters get tips. For example, you wouldn't tip a T.G.I. Fridays waiter as much as you would a Four Seasons waiter. It could be possible that the black customer is cheap or ignorant to the etiquette of tipping.

In all cases, not all Blacks tip badly. The next time someone complains to you, remember this.

I do know the reluctance of some waitstaff to take black patron's tables because of this STEREOTYPE.

Part of the reason is that as most black people grow up "dining out" is an EXTREME luxury. We are not taught the rules of tipping.

I learned because my mother made sure that we had those kinds of experiences as a rule of thumb. We went to the ballet mattinee and the opera mattinee. She didn't want us to act like we hadn't been taught any better.

As a standard I tip 20 percent for really good service. But for poor or just standard service I tip between 15 and 18 percent.

I do however think that it is sad when people act as if it is just a phenomenon related to black people.

There are bad tippers in every culture.

Yes it is mean to make a statementment like that, but unfortunately this is some true to it. One reason is they don't always have enough money to tip when they go out, as it is a luxury for some, on the other hand a lot of black people do not realize that servers in general only get paid $3.00 an hour and I personally have worked in a place that would only pay $10 a day, because they believe that we made enough tips. Unless you work for catering or some hotels server salaries depend on their tips.

They are bad tippers. I am black and I have worked in the industry and know it to be true as well.
But it is mostly black females that do this not as much on the male side.
We as black people are not always the victims but sometimes the problem. If everyone is saying this why always shoot the messenger make an excuse or say it was not me so it is a lie. If we are getting some bad reputations maybe we should look at ourselves more.

I don't think it's that Black people tip bad. It's usually a matter of the service that one is given when in a restaurant. I don't mind to leave a large tip but, if my service is horrible I am flat out not gonna leave a large tip for someone that is giving me poor service. I understand if the place is busy but at least bring me some Water and let me know what's going on, before making me wait there for like twenty minutes and no one shows up. Then when someone does come to the table, they throw the water on the table and leave for another twenty minutes and return and ask what would, you like and rush me to order. That is rude and very unprofessional. Not to mention when I do receiver my meal it takes another 30 minutes, but yet they never come back to inform me what is going on, and when my meal does finally come, I don't see them anymore until my meal is practically finished and your coming and asking me is everything okay. This is why some Black people may not tip so well, it's because of poor service from waiters and waitresses both Black and White.

there's a stigma that black human beings are undesirable tippers and there's a sturdy volume of fact to that, I even have important it first hand. it extremely isn't any longer purely black human beings inspite of the incontrovertible fact that, it extremely is any team of human beings,(white, black, hispanic, or asian) that have not been expert or instructed properly approximately usual tipping coverage regulations interior the U.S. 15% is for adequate provider, 20% is for extremely sturdy provider. The equivalent difficulty exist to another extant with human beings who're traveling from different international locations, they don't have an be attentive to-how of our technique, and that their server's hourly salary in ninety% of the united statesis under minimum salary by ability of a extensive margin. In approximately 50% of the country servers gets a commission around 2.13 an hour by utilising there company. the respond is to no longer discriminate against black human beings and others, although to have the eating place and hospitality industries step up, and upward thrust up for there artwork rigidity and attempt to show all people in this difficulty.

i was a waitress once and it depended on the person mostly, i could wait my *** off on a white person ( or another race ) and if they did not tip or gave a little then no one explained how tipping works.

do you know how much a waitress/ waiter makes an hour?????

$2.13 an hour, yes i said two thirteen an hour.

so would you work for $2.13 an hour?????????? and tioping is 15% of your bill so if you spend $100.00 you are suppose to tip at least$10.00 ( and that is only 10% ) no less than that or if you do 15% then you give them $15.00, that is why i do not go out unless i have enough to leave a tip,( because now that gas prices have soared think about what they spend in gas just getting to work ) would you work for $2.13 an hour wait on people that ***** and complain, take things out on the waiter or waitress when the cook screwed up, the people at that table are sitting down running them to death only to give them a $100 or $2.00 on a $50.00 check.
would you want them to do that to your mom???, your girlfriend or wife or would you like them to run you to death and give you a $1.00 ( or even nothing ????)

next time you are eating out think about it, think about their kids, their wife, the gas that they may have to put in the car to get home, their bills that they have to pay.

I have worked in the serving business for years. It is a very bad stereotype that black people do not tip, but for the most part, in my experiences, they don't. I am a very good server, and I do not treat them differently, even though there is a very good chance that I will not get a decent tip. In my first year of serving I had a black family of 5 come in. I was very nice (like I am to everyone) and at the end of their meal they thanked me for treating them like an equal. I still didn't get a good tip. That time I was ok with it.

NOT ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE BAD TIPPERS. I am a very good tipper and I have observed my dates when they tip and they are very good. Other times on a date I offer to leave the tip. That's like when people say Asian people cannot drive, some Asian people drive very well.
