good carbs are non processed carbs. good carbs are high fiber, whole wheat, whole grain breads, pastas, crackers, cereals, oatmeal, soy products, potatoes(watch the condiments), popcorn, and low/nonfat dairy products, fruits, vegies, and berries. stay away from overly processed foods that are high in sugar and white flour. always strive for the above mentioned. carbs are a source of energy for the body and it's wrong to deprive your body of such a fuel. our ancestors lived greatly on carbs and proteins. we can do the same. the difference is that their carbs were natural and not processed like our foods are. so, stick to the basics and you will do fine.

Always has been. Don't let those diets fool you; Carbs are partially required to keep the body going. Long term energy is better, but Carbs, which are short term, are good for athletic things like exercise and such.

carbs that come from natural sources, like in fruit and vegetables, are considered good. Also, if you are into fat-burning, carbs that register low on the glycemic index (GCI) are good. You should probably do a search for more info, but there are carbs that get burned quickly by your body and other carbs that are digested slowly over hours. High glycemic foods like sugar or white bread are quickly absorbed and do not give your body a longlasting energy source. Good carbs are considered oatmeal, al dente pasta, and others.
Though what I have written is the most general opinion, nutrition is everchanging and there are different schools of thought. Sometimes it is good to eat a high-GCI food in specific occasions, when you need a quick energy source.

There are simple carbs and complex carbs this is based on the rate at which they release their energy.Simple carbs like white bread break down fast, and can convert to fast before they are needed for energy.

Yes, carbs give you energy which is why I am so against the Atkins diet. People tend to look a carbs as bad but they do more good then bad to you. It's the fat that you have to wach out for. A low fat/moderate carb/ high protein diet is a key to shredding pounds and keeping them off.

YES!!! Not all carbs are bad, just like all fats are not bad. Carbs that are high on the glycemic index (GI) are the ones that cause problems in terms of gaining weight and insulin response, which leads to Type II Diabetes, so you want your carbs to be low-GI whenever possible. Fresh fruits and vegetables are low-GI but fruit juices are high-GI. Whole grain products are low-GI but products with refined white flour in them are high-GI. All types of sugar will be higher up in the GI rankings, but natural sugar like honey and the sugar in fruit are better than refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Does that help?

Complex carbs are good for you, it is energy derived from foods not containing refined sugars. Just think of anything with white flour or refined sugar as the enemy.
