I've always had dogs and at one point worked full time and lived in an apartment. The problem will be finding a breed with your energy level outdoors, that is okay with time alone, and small enough to live inside. You will have to have someone come by to do a pet check and walk though every three - four hours that you're not at home or have someone pet sit or doggy day care. There are quizzes to help you find the right breed. Research the breeds. If you do end up with a high energy level, you'll definitely need to have someone pet sit or doggy day care. Remember that the lower the energy level usually the calmer the dog is about being left alone; however, few dogs will like being left alone for long stretches of time. Add: Since you do have a cat, the dog would have something to keep his/her attention while you're working; however, you'd still need to get someone to walk the dog every few hours if a puppy and every 3-4 hours for a grown dog to prevent accidents.

I suppose the real answer is NO. BUT you could give an ailing, old dog a good home, lets say like a greyhound. They need very little exercise and do sleep a fair bit during the day. Food/walk and drink can be provided am before you go out to work and pm when you return from work. Maybe a pet care service would let the dog out at mid-day. I think this would be a very good solution for you both. You both gain a friend, you both have company. Good luck.

I guess that really depends on what you do for a living. Do you have a job whereby you can take the dog with you?? Alternatively do you work close enough to home to be able to pop home and let he/she out to answer the call of nature. Do you have enough space at home to keep the dog outside in a kennel?
What kind of dog are you intending on keeping, every breed has a different personality/traits. Some dogs can be left others can't, you will soon know if he/she is ok to be left when you find your living room in a million pieces!!!!

A puppy or a dog? You aren't going to be able to train a puppy being at work full-time everyday.

If it's a dog-Are you able to come home at lunch and let it out? Is it trained and used to staying at home by itself? I personally don't believe in leaving a dog outside or leaving it in a cage all day.

We got a dog last year (who was 7 at the time) and he has some separation anxiety problems, but we never had a problem with him when my fiance and I were both working away from home full-time since we worked close enough to let him out at lunch. (The only problem we have is leaving him with someone else for more than 2 nights-after that he ends up peeing all over their house.)

Now he's spoiled because daddy works from home (and I've actually been working from home for about 3 weeks) so he is around someone all day. He HATES to be left alone.

I have 3 black labs and work full time. We play early in the morning and every evening. We have a 2 1/2 year old that they just love to play with. It is not a problem for the dogs to be in the house all day. They have the entire house to play in and everything seems to be in tact when we get home.

It is only an option if you are able to own 2 dogs, dogs are pack animals and need to be with other animals. You need to get both animals young and take time to be with them for a time before you go to work,in other words you need to adopt them when you have a vacation.

I own a dog and work full time, but I'm lucky my Mum and Dad have him during the day and I pick him up every night. It wouldn't be fair on a dog to leave it shut up on its own all day.

there is no law against it but its cruel. how is it going to get
food
water
go to the toilet
company
i would like a dog but i work full time but im not selfish enough to do so. get a cat they are more independent. i think it would be cruel to get a dog if u worked. what about if it barked all day or whined for u.

Well yes, why do you think you can't? Millions of people have dogs cats and even kids and work full time jobs

legally yes, morally I am not sure, they need walking a lot and exercise, unless you have a garden that is secure that you could let the dog run in, or perhaps you could consider a dog walking service?
