My sound problem continues despite reinstalling my Windows 98 program overtop of the existing one. I couldn't open my sound icon to check if the mute is on and even after reinstalling Windows I still can't get the sound to work. I agree looking for sound adapters isn't the easiest process so I would prefer not to venture into that territory.

Windows 98 will in most cases not detect or even if it does, have the correct drivers for your sound card.

Best bet is to see if you can find the recovery CD that came with the computer. On there it will have the drivers for the sound card. Pop in the CD and it should be pretty self explanatory.

No sound icon pretty much seals the deal that no driver for your sound card has been installed.

Since it seems like its an older PC and since you probably don't have the drivers, why not save your self the headache and buy a cheap sound card for $20?

That should do the trick....If you card worked before, chances are it either broke or the driver became corrupted.

Best of luck! =)

Two or three possible reasons for no sound.
First, go to start, settings, control panel, system,Device manager.
Look for any yellow exclamation marks or question marks. If any of them are on audio or sound related issues, click on them and you will probably have to reload drivers.
Second, In control panel, look for multimedia, and then devices. You should find an audio device listed. Double click on it and make sure that the "Use audio features on this device" is checked.
Third, If you still haven't found audio, In the control panel, go to "Add New Hardware" and double click with the idea that you sill search for uninstalled or inoperable hardware.

If all this fails, you may have a defective sound module on your mother board, and will have the option of purchasing a sound card. Of course, are your speakers of the amplified version? Non-amplified speakers might not respond to the weak signal coming from the line output of the computer. Which brings up another point, are you sure that you are in the line out, and not microphone connection? Are you using a connector plug with a sleeve, ring, and tip (3 definate pieces on the plug)?
You should look to see if the mother board has directed the sound to the front panel conenctors on your computer.
I hope that you get sound.

Are you sure the speakers are plugged into the correct port? Plugged into electricity?
Did you change you monitor recently to one with internal speakers? If so, external speakers won't work.

Sounds like you are saying you can't get your sound mixer to load up. Try searching for PC sound mixer and trying one of the mixers that you find.
