Americans in general live an easy life, so lack of challenge makes people lazy. It's also lack of intelligence. Parent blame schools and schools blame parents, and nobody takes responsibility. The media is owned by big money, and we allow corporate America undue influence. Influence on TV, radio, billboards, etc. Kids get pressure from all sides, but it's school and parents that can help the most.
ABC's 20/20 reporter John Stossel did a report on our education system, and compared it to Belguim, where parents have choice on what school to send their kids. When the school doesn't perform, it collapses because income is based upon number of students. The teachers find ways to be creative, to get kids to learn or they find themselves out of a job.
Obviously parents have influence too, but if their kids spend more waking hours in school than with them, then they have a harder time being the stronger influence. And mostly, if the parents are working heavy hours, then they won't have energy to be a stronger influence.
We are the only 1st-world country without healthcare, and when compared to Europe, we work many more hours and get paid less. And, we are the dumbest.

You're probably going to hear from a lot of people who are insulted by this question, but it's still a good one.
Americans work longer hours and take less vacation than workers in any other industrialized nation. It leaves little time or energy for having a life, including cooking.
Obesity is a symptom, not the illness itself. We tend to pour everything into work, to the cost of our health, relationships, and personal lives. For that reason, we tend not to treat ourselves very well, or the people around us - we have to squeeze everything into a few minutes a day, and for many of us, the weekend is just the time when we catch up on the housework and chores we don't get to during the week.
We've gotten into the habit of "relaxing" by eating and watching t.v., or playing video games. Prepared foods save time because they're, well, prepared - as do fast foods. Unfortunately, they aren't very healthy.
I've lost over 100 pounds (so far), and have had to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, and yes, make time to cook - but it's a challenge juggling work, home, and other demands.

In your country a regular workday probably does not consist of 8-10 hours. If women work, they probably don't have to work as much as a man, so there is more time to cook and prepare meals.
This doesn't always include commute time to and from work plus additional errands, etc. that can stretch the average American's day to almost 12 hours away from home. Doesn't leave much time for us to cook.

Too many people in America only want to up size their food portions. No one eats to survive any more they survive to eat. Also no one gets out anymore and gets any exercise. America has become a nation of lazy people.

I think part of the reason why Americans are so obese is that food is very cheap in the U.S. as compared to many other foreign countries. We really take for granted that food is so inexpensive here.

Right after we saved the world for the second time last century in 1945, we started puttting our winter coats on a little early and keeping them on a little later each year, and now we keep them on all year long.
