Find an agency. Do your research first and foremost. Don't assume that an agency is ethical simply because it is religious. Talk to people, join listservs, etc.

I will tell you that Guatemala is about to be closed due to the US ratifying the Hague convention. You would have to work very quickly to get into the program before the close.

Feel free to email me through my blog (www.talesfromthestirrups.blogspot.com) if you have other questions. We brought our son home from Guatemala last year.

Find a Yahoo group about adopting from Central and South America. Each country has its own rules and regulations -- especially over how many trips and the minimal length of each trip which is required. Some require two trips. Some trips are a month or more long.

An adoption agency is preferable. However, once again, I suggest the Yahoo group because the best way to know about an agency is the people who have had experience with them.

The next point is to start a home study. Almost all require it. You're request from the US government is going to reguire one. Don't start it until you've got an agency, though. Some agencies require you use only people they want doing the homestudy!!!

I am not familiar with that website. My husband and I are in the adoption process. Find you an agency (search on the web ~ your state, adoption agencies). You can contact them and get all the information you need. I know you can't get anything done without have a home study completed first. Good luck!

There are attorneys that specialize in adoption process. I would research the local attorneys in your area. Also, you have to decide what type of adoption you might be interested in: open, closed, international, etc. All of those options have their own sets of stipulations and procedures.

You could try adopting through a Lutheran, Catholic or Episcopal charity.
