DVD's are great, but I would strongly recommned you make a second copy of everything (Murphy's Law). I prefer to use CD's as they seem to be more reliable and more transportable - they seem to work in just about everything. This is not quite so true with DVD's. In my expeience about 10% of writable DVD media end up in the trash can. I rarely have a bad CD.

DVDs and CDs are great, but you should transfer the contents to fresh discs every year or two - they degrade over time (much faster than factory pressed CDs)
I personally use hard disks and I make full system backups with Norton Ghost. I've been a bit paranoid ever sine one of my hard disks failed on me. I had most of my personal stuff on CDs, but I forgot about my mail folders etc., and it took me a full day to re-install and tweak the OS, applications and utilities.
If I were really paranoid, I'd make two sets of backups, and keep one set at a friend's house. That would cover system failure, theft, and even the house burning down.

I normally store them on two different hard drives and upload them to a website like Flikr. Most sites won't store full resolution photos without charging a fee though. You might consider getting a membership. It also allows friends to easily view your photos. DVDs and CDs will may only last for a few years before deteriorating so you would want to be sure to make copies of them after a couple of years.
