Is this inside or outside the house? You really shouldn't leave pet food outside - there's a good possibility of contamination. It isn't good to leave food down all the time anyway. Especially on dry food cats should have a good eight hours between "meals" for adequate digestion.
If you still insist on doing this you simply put the food in a larger pan with water around it. The ants will not cross the water barrier. That's what we do when we feed cats who are living their lives outside.

bay leaves are supposed to repel ants. Buy it in the spice section at store, try putting it in a pair of old nylons tie it up and put underneath the food bowl.
Ants can swim and survive in water for a few days. Used to live in FL and they did a story on it after all the flooding from the hurricanes. Ants also can climb up the sides of a food bowl holder.

I'm not high in my vocabulary intelligence, so I don't really understand the question, but I'll give it a shot. If the cat food bowl is heavy enough, you can get a plate filled with water anf put the cat's food bowl in it. That way, if the ants try to get to the bowl, they drown (unless they're good swimmers) I hope I helped you!!

I know it sounds weird but put a bounce dryer sheet under the cats dish. I put them in my garbage can this summer and they stayed away... Or as my gram says draw a line of chalk on every door way and the ants won't cross the line, unless they are getting in some other way! Good Luck ; )

i agree with putting your cats food dish in a plate of water also. we had a really bad aunt problem and our bug guy who sprays our house said to use a spray bottle filled with about 1/4 way filled with reg old dish soap and filled the rest of the way with water spray the little suckers and they die . there is no smell and it's safe around humans and dogs and cats , just don't spray it on there food .only in the surrounding area, hope this helps ,good luck!:)
