I have this old audio tape of a conversation. I want to be able to adjust the audio of just one of the participants in the conversation so the whole conversation can be listened to easily without messing around with my volume control all the time. I understand I need to get the track on my computer, which is no problem. What software will allow the extraction and editing of one voice??

Thanks in advance!

If the tape is multitrack this is possible, if not it becomes difficult.

In both cases you will need professional audio software and the best on the market is Adobe Audition (it used to be called Cool Edit and is what all the major UK radio stations use - the BBC have it incorporated into their MusicMan software suite).

If the tape isn't multitrack (ie, all the voices are on one straight recording) then you can use Adobe Audition to highlight the parts of teh conversation you need to increase the volume on and boost the DB levels of that bit. If there are parts you need to decrease you can do this too.

You can download a trial version (30 days functionability) from Adobe's website.

You might want to try Audacity...it's free. I don't know a whole lot about it because I haven't messed around with it enough yet, but it does have a lot of good features. It's free and worth a shot.

Sound Forge, now published by Sony, is a great editing program.
