Because we don't want to get robbed or purse snatched. It's called street smarts.

Do they ever consider that if I snatch their purse in the elevator, where could I possibly go with it? Secondly if they clutch their purse, do they really really think that I can't get it from them if I really want it? I heard a comedian once talk about this same issue. He walked past a woman in an open convertable who locked her doors after she saw him comming. He said that slapped her on the back of the head just on stupidity.

I assume you are black and you must think the ladies do this because you are black. Trust me... they do it to ANY male in the same situation. They are just being safe and probably are scared of life in general. They might even do it to another woman. Relax. Don't take it personally. If you had a daughter, wouldn't you want her to be cautious too? You'd advise her to lock her car door when she gets in the car in a mall parking lot, right? My husband puts his wallet in his front pockets all the time... just to be cautious. Not because there is a black man walking by him.

Anyone with a brain is going to lock their car doors in the mall. And a woman should always clutch her purse when anyone comes near them. You sound racist. Yes, blacks can be racists.

you dont have to look like a thug for women to feel less secure around people. it is not how we feel about you, it is the s**t that has been ingrained in us by society since before we were born. As much as I hate it, most white women still believe in the stuff that they grew up with. I always clutch my purse tight and lock my doors, not because a black man walks by, but because of the way society is today, its scary to even leave your doors unlocked in your own neighborhood. there is just so much violence nowadays that it isnt funny. I hope that there are some white women out there who dont treat you like a criminal, I know I wouldnt :)

Well, you may be an upright citizen, but if you *look* or *dress* like the kind of person they see on TV in the news broadcasts, & other shows which show people of your same color acting poorly, then they get paranoid.
Try not to take it personally, because it isn't. If they *knew* you, they wouldn't worry.
Be the bigger man & don't let them get to you.

it is not you, it is the fact that I do those things around strangers, fear of the unknown and of course for safety at all times...sometimes I clutch my purse because I am getting so old that I forget where it is and need to find it often.

What is your racial/cultural background? If you are a minority which is unfortunately stereotyped, than you likely know the answer to your own question, don't you? That does not make it justified or okay or any less tragic....but people have engrained ideas they are taught from early on..and many of them don't question them..if it's any consolation, i am a "white lady", and i do not fit that mold you have described...i have no idea how you present yourself or what your background is so i cannot fully address your inquiry.

They clutch their purses because they want to reach out and grab you. But... they're too shy.
When they lock their doors, it's because they need help staying away from you.
