There are a lot of other jobs besides being a Mess Specialist (now called Culinary Specialist). Even with bad credit, you can still enlist and, yes, you can get a security clearance. A background check will be done and as long as you are upfront about your situation, more than likely you will not have any trouble getting in. Even those folks who have high debt are able to get in and hold a security clearance. Your best bet is to talk with a recruiter and they will work with you. I would imagine if you just filed bankruptcy last week, there may be an issue, however, my motto is if you ask you have a 50/50 chance of getting a yes. If you don't ask, you will always get a no.
Also, if your first choice is to go into the Air Force and you are turned away, don't let that discourage you. Each branch of the military works different, so work your way to the next branch you're interested in until you get the yes!
As a Sailor for 15 years, it can be a pain getting in with all the paperwork you have to do, but it is sooooo worth it! Like any job - it has it's ups and downs, however, the pros definitely outweight the cons.
Best of luck!

Outstanding Deuce Salute... pinning down the issue of Bad Credit to issuance of a Security Clearance. Mess Specialists (MS) are now Culinary Specialists ?
Nothing wrong with being an MS, if you start young, work hard, take every possible school and course you can, and present yourself as clean, intelligent and squared away you could end up working the wardroom or even an Admiral's Mess... That would be an incredible entry into proffessional chef in the private sector.
I agree with most of those who recommend you talk to your recruiter... THOUGH, ALWAYS ask that your recruiter show you documentation that shows you can get that rating without a clearance. THEN ensure you get a guarantee of that A-School.
I'm not SUGGESTING that recruiters are shifty, sneaky, sea-lawyers who would sell their sister to get you to sign on the dotted-line... BUT...
The Chief who signed me up made a POINTED effort NOT to make clear to me that the NEC (Navy Enlistment Classification... same as MOS) I was seeking AW for P-3 Orions had a sweet little clause that IF the instructors at Naval AirCrewman School thought I would make a good RESCUE SWIMMER... I WOULD get orders on graduation to attend RSS (Rescue Swimmers' School) before attending AW A-School, and refusal to attend would mean a transfer to the FLEET (chipping paint).
Darn it... I was a State ranked swimmer and a lifeguard... the NACS instructors saw my record, and off to RSS I went... Graduated 2nd in class. Sadly, having the RS NEC meant I was destined for helicopters rather than the NAS Moffett Field based Orions (family home, girlfriend, and Mom's home-cooked meals)

Bad credit doesn't really stop you from joining the military. Some people haven't passed a background check for certain levels of security because of it, but they are still in the service. You name it, it is a job. Just about any job in the civilian is available in the military.

first of all contact a recruiter. they would have the best answer for you. what your credit is should not effect what job you can do in the u.s. navy. what will effect you is your qualifications. plus if you owe too much money that may effect the chances of getting in.

plenty of jobs don't require a Clearance at all. Additionally, depending on how bad your credit is and how long you have had it, you still may qualify for a Secret Clearance.

There are thousands of jobs, it will just be difficult and next to impossible to get any job that required a security clearance.

if you have little or no debt, the past can be overlooked. If you still owe a lot of money, you won't be able to get a clearance. You could be a gunner's mate.
