You have to take into consideration that the TV will look much bigger in your living room than it does in the showroom. A 50" is arguably too big for a room in which you are sitting less than 12 feet from the screen.

The idea behind high definition, is that since the TV is so much sharper and clearer, you can sit much closer to it than the old CRT TVs. So- this way you can get that big screen theater effect.

The rule of thumb that I've read in many places is that you should be sitting 3 to 4 times as far away as the diagonal dimention of the TV. So, if you're buying a 50" TV, (which is 4ft 2in), you should be sitting between about 12 and 17 feet away (I averaged).

The distance you're going to be sitting from the TV is going to be the primary factor in how good the image will appear. If you ask the sales person (providing they aren't just being greedy) they will tell you to actually measure the distance the TV will be from the main seating area. Then while it's in the store you stand AND neal that distance away. That's really the only true way to be sure. Otherwise, if the screen is too large in comparison to the distance the image will look "off" to "crappy".
