the hair products are legion, never quite sure what to get, any suggestions? My hair is black and 1" long or so, wavy and doesn't seem to like pointing to the sky!

The waviness of your hair may be part of the reason, it is hard to get wavy hair to spike (I take it that's what you mean by pointing the sky)
Also, if your hair is only 1" long it is probably too short to get much style out of. Maybe try growing it out to about 2in.
Product: Try using pomade, it works great for the messy look. It is kinda waxy so it doesn't get stiff & hard like gel, it is more pliable and works best on dry hair.

just put some gel in your hands and just run it thu your hair and make it look messy it is easy try doing it when your hair is still wet when you get out of the shower

rub in wax on dry hair, do it as if you are drying it with a towel, you know just mess it round n give it a good rub! Gelwont work, it has to be wax, trust me im a hairdresser!

Try to put gel on first, then hair spray. Use fingers to work it to the look you desired. Have fun.

Take a bath and get out of the bathe. Then as quickly as you get out, shake your head hardcore, and act like your at a rock stay overall performance, placed your bangs to the facet, and hairspray. thats in fact it, and you will like the effect I wish you the better of luck. _KayleinSmith_

I used Dax (the red tub), does the job on my hair and I have thick black hair.

Get it completely wet rub dry with towel and hairspray when satisfied.

just get normal gel pea ized after washing it and mess your hair with with your hands
