I think the police sometimes get too much bad press.
I recently worked in a betting shop and i was robbed at knife point (very scary situation). My colleague and i managed to get out and I phoned 999 from another shop and when I came out there were beat bobbies in the street - I was hysterical at this point and started screaming for their attention and they jumped in the car and came to our rescue - local people chased the scummy person before the police arrived, the police where very reasurring to us and managed to calm us down. Within minutes the CID arrived, then within half and hour they had sniffer dogs and a while later forensics - the way the Police reactted was great, and there follow up was also good. Still never caught the mongrol!
It has been my only involvement with the police and I was very satisfied with the response I received.
But i feel that there is so much petty crime on the streets of Brittain today it is hard for the police to respond appropriatley. And as for the rise in knife crime and all sorts of other serious crimes they have such a hard job dealing with the demand, and then when a chav throws a stone my neighbour next door expects a full blow police investigation???

Help, Protect and Reassure... youve made that up lady. The British Police dont have a "motto"... except to serve queen and country.
Im REALLY bored of these police bashing questions on here. People on ask them because they know they get a reaction.
What do you do for a living that is so upstanding? Please tell me why you feel you can judge? Do you put your life at risk on a daily basis to protect the community? Coppers are often young peopl, working long shift hours for low pay.

Having been closely involved with the police service for many years I would say they are mostly a reflection of the society from which they come, good and bad. Nowadays it appears that, to quote a German general in WW 1(reference the British Army) they are lions led by donkeys.

There are good and bad in every profession and the Police are no different from any other. I"ve dealt with mature, honest and helpful Policemen and young, presumptuous, bigoted Policemen. They all have a difficult job enforcing some stupid laws. Look at the latest where children under 12 and a certain hight. have to sit on booster seats, how the hell are they going to enforce this one? Stop every car with kids in, ask for a birth certificate. measure hight etc. Utter nonsence.

My limited experience of British Police Officers was very nice. They were polite AND reassuring. I've never met an American Police Officer that was as courteous, and I know quite a few.

I have only had good experiences with them... But there again I have never been caught doing anything wrong.
My brother is in the Merseyside Police, he likes working for them.
having lived all over the world I would say the British Police are about the best. The worst are the Police in the USA where they reach for their guns and ask questions later.
I got pulled over for speeding in Florida once and the idiot policeman had his gun unholstered and was pointing it at me. He was a big fat donut eating fool who was soooooo damn happy to catch someone going 5mph over the speed limit he nearly wet himself. Its really scary the people they give a gun and a badge to in the US.

I think it is hard to as whether the 'British' Police are Good or Bad. I am under the impression that each counties police service works from their own initiatives/directives. Its easy to criticise the whole organisation but I think that as in every public service there is always going to be criticism.

I got stopped on my motorbike once doing more than in excess of the national speed limit. Got pulled and the nice chappie started asking me all sorts of question about the bike. Turns out his son was buying the same model and he wanted to know what I thought. Told me to slow down a little but that was it...so not all bad.

I know the Police in the UK can be a wee bit naughty & over the top at times... but you have to give them credit for doing a right pissy job.. My wife & I were chased down the Motorway by a Police Mercedes - complete with styling kit...I may add... for doing 73 mile per hour - 3 mile an hour over the limit...Unluckily for them they did not know I was Lord G .. They were the cheekiest pair of Plods I have ever had the misfortune to deal with. and I am glad I had the Video feature on my Mobile on..best to just nod and yes sir no sir them...till you get them into court..
