God stopped Abraham. From that we learned that human sacrifice is never acceptable to God. Human sacrifice was common among other nations of the time, but not for God's chosen people until the sacrifice of Jesus. Israelites only sacrificed grains, oil, and little critters. After the destruction of the 2nd Temple, all sacrifice was replaced by prayer.

well i think you are missing the point there a little, firstly that was a test of faith because if his son was sacrificed in the end that would only prove that he was worshiping the wrong god, but i think the question should be how much you really believe and trust in your god if you have one, and would you be willing to obey if that obeying means you lose everything on earth that is of value to you.

I'd have to ask him to pick up the the rock he couldn't lift and drop it on his toe. While he was mulling that over, I'd convert to Buddhism.
UPDATE: To "Rosalind1" I hope you at least ask for some ID before you kill your own child. (Actually, I'm hoping your kids are out of the house already.)

Yeah, if I started hearing "God voices" telling me what to do, I'd be seeking out a psychiatrist.
Lest I'd end up like one of these people:

God doesn't 'appear' to anyone, since He is above expectations. Even prophets like Moses, did NOT 'see' God but talked to Him. I believe if God 'showed' Himself to someone, that someone will not be able to absorb the shock of this greatness, and most certainly faint if not die.

No I would not and any compassionate deity would not ask that as a 'test'. Even in jest it's a cruel and heartless thing to ask of someone.
