I have a 4 way adapter socket which serves power to 4 hi-fi seperates. I notice that when they are connected to the socket and the main switch is in the on position that the hifi seperates have a almost inaudible hum despite being turned off.

I don't mean appliances that are on standby like video recorders and TVs. I mean things that are really turned off but still have electrons flowing through a turned on socket...not a turned on appliance.

Many modern appliances have electronic circuits that are "on" and consume a small amount of power even when they are "turned off". This probably includes your hi-fi. This is true of any appliance that can be turned on with a remote control, can be set to "turn on" at a particular time, that uses an electronic "on switch" instead of a mechanical on switch, or incorporates a clock.

The amount of power involved is usually very small, and the danger of it "turning on by itself" in a dangerous way is also small.

Those with the instant on feature consume a small amound of power (10-40 watts) which adds up with everyone wanting instant on for their TV and hi-fi. Only unplugging will stop that consumption. But you still have your clock radio sucking up some juice so you will never have a zero power consumption in your house.

Everything that is plugged in still consumes some power, even if it is turned off. It is still brining in power.
