My tonsils have been swollen for about a year now... I know, I know, I went to a doctor when I first noticed it, but he told me to get blood work done. When I had it done, he said that they didn't need to be removed. Well, now they hurt. They didn't hurt a year ago, but now they hurt and it's very hard for me to swallow. I was wondering if anyone knew that if I could just go to my doctor again and tell him to refer me to someone to get them removed, or does there have to be a set reason why I need them removed with more blood work.

Either return to your doctor or go to another for a second opinion...are you currently going to an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doc), if not, you should be as that is an area they specialize in. I'm not sure how old you are, but keep in mind that while children can bounce back from this procedure right away, adults normally don't.

I would go back to the original doctor. While it may be true that they didn't need to be removed a year ago, he may now have a different opinion once you start describing your pain.

After that, if he still doesn't think they should be removed, ask him what to do about the pain. If that doesn't work out, I would seek a second opinion.

Go to a diffrent doctor, mabe even a ear nose and throat doctor and tell him what is going on and tell him that you want them removed due to the pain and sickness they have caused, there is no reason for you to suffer due to what one doctor said, always get a second opinion.

This is depenedent on your hospitalization coverage. All of them vary. You will still need to have preop work - however, if you choose to have them out and it's not necessary, they will not generally cover it. The current rule is unless they are a source of infection, they will not be removed because they actually STOP the infection from advancing through your body.

Once you are above a certain age, they dont like to take them out, until they get really bad, which sounds like where you just about are now.
I didnt have mine taken out til my early 20s and by then, its major surgery as your body is used to having them.
Talk to your Dr. again, and they may decide its time to get em out.
Good luck to ya,

Go back, it could be your tonsils or you could have strep or something like that. You might need to have more blood work.
