That dog is no longer a puppy. It should have been housebroken a long time ago. It's going to be difficult now, and she might need some professional help. Here are some tips on how to go about training the dog.

it is very important to keep your puppy in a crate for the first year. They will not pee in their bed. Then let the dog out to go and take the dog to the same spot they will remember. to only go there. Do not yell at your dog he/she does not know. She only knows that she was allowed to go where ever she wanted to. This dog should have been housebroken by now. I recommend taking her to pet-smart they should have some lessons that they can do. Shih tzu are very smart. Remember to give her treats as soon as she goes to pee outside make sure you praise her. She will know she is doing something right. good luck!

try putting newspaper near the door at first as will automatically use this (dont know why) unfortunatly you have left it very late to start training but this may be because she has just got it. when the puppy (its a puppy until 1.5 yrs) has gotten used to the paper move slowly out side also lots of walking makes the dogs bowel movements more frequent so regular appointed walks will encourage it to go outside at the same time everyday you will have some accidents as with children but with dogs the best way to avoid this is to put its nose in its mess (clean straight away) it will not like this but be very patient it works good luck x

He needs to be potty trained. Is he neutered? If not, that's the first thing you need to do. While neutering a dog as old as 1 may not stop the behavior completely because it may have already become habit, it will greatly help with his training and reduce the "urge" to go inside to mark his territory.

Once he's neutered, you need to get a crate and crate train him. It should be just big enough for him to stand up, lay down and turn around in. You can put a bed or blanket in it if he doesn't chew them up. He should be kept in the crate at all times when you cannot watch him. If you leave the house, even for a minute, go to sleep, are cooking, eating, watching TV, reading, on the computer... When you do want him out of the crate in the house, he should be under your direct supervision, preferably attached to a leash with you holding the other end. He shouldn't be able to sneak around the corner to potty or be able to go without you noticing. Usually dogs will start to sniff around or get a little restless when they are ready to go, so as soon as you notice that, take him outside. He should go outside to potty after eating, drinking, and after being in the crate for an extended period of time. At first, every time you take him out of the crate, take him outside to potty. As soon as he finishes going outside praise him like you've never praised him before. Maybe give him a small yummy treat, but he should feel like he just did the best thing ever! If you catch him going inside, say "NO!" in a firm deep voice, but don't yell. Getting louder won't tell him anything except that you aren't in control. Then take him outside to finish. Don't spank him or rub his nose in it. Dogs don't understand that. They just become fearful of you. Don't give him water just before you leave the house, he should have water available whenever he is outside the kennel and when you can take him out. For more information, the best book ever on housebreaking is Housebreaking: Pure and Simple by Mark and Dru Katz. It's about $5 on Amazon.com. With their method you can train any dog to potty outside. Good luck! Also, remember, the most important rule is to be consistent. Be more stubborn than he is and you will win.

Also, very important, clean any areas he has pottied with an enzyme cleaner from the pet store. If he finds a spot that smells like a toilet, he will use it as a toilet. Regular cleaners just mask the smell so that WE can't smell them, but dogs can smell much smaller amounts and you need an enzyme cleaner to get it all out.

well i have a shih tzu and all i did was take her outside as much as i could she got the idea and everytime she needs to go she stands by the door but at the age of you dog i think you should still use wee wee pads when you leave lay down and old towel or a wee wee pad at the bottom of you cage just in case he has an accident hope this helpe!

When I was potty training my dog. We didn't want to crate train him so potty training was really hard but we took him to puppy classes. I learned there to give a treat to your dog every time he goes to the bathroom outside and make a big deal about the dog going to the bathroom. I always said "oh good boy, good pee outside" well petting him and giving him a treat and so on. You have to get a word that your dog will remember. Like pee, outside, poop. whatever word you want they'll catch on. Now my dog knows because I say to him "wanna go outside?" and he poops outside It takes a lot of work and understanding when they do poop in the house. Just remember their learning just like you had to once. Remember always award them for doing what you want and them getting it right. It will work I promise.

I've never heard of a 1 year old puppy.Anyway she's probably needs professional help now. Take him to obedience school and inquire there. I could tell you how I do it with my weimaraners pups if that would help, but there's no telling if this will be effective as this dog is way beyond house training age.Good luck.

well we have the same dog they both took up to a year to house train. get puppy pads get the ones that say grass smell on it (at pet smart) and put it at the door. than when it gets used to it take it out side and let it do its thing. (dont forget to reward it) and if it goes in the houes DO NOT put their noise by it cause they would smell it than eat it or think it was ok. just show them what they did and tap them on their noise or behind.
