Most children go to preschool (nursery school) at 3 or 4. The first year of "real" school is kindergarten which most children start at 5 or 6. Many kindergartens are only a half day. Then, kids are in grades 1-5 at the same school as their kindergarten. Most then go to middle school for grades 6-8 and high school for grades 9-12. Most graduate high school at around the age of 18. Some then go to college (like your university--which is expensive in the United States and is not paid for by the government at all. My college tuition was the equivalent of 15,000 pounds per year, though many are less than that) which is 4 years. Others go to junior college (probably similar to your college) for 2 years.

Our preschools are private, but many communities have great public schools for grades kindergarten-12 and most US kids go to public school, unlike England. Most kids who go to private schools go for religious reasons.

Also, we do have testing, but it's nothing like your A-levels. There isn't a test that determines where you go to school and what type of school you'll go to. Testing well can help you get into a better college (university)

like England not very well actually.

Oh... I see what you mean.

Most children go to Kindergarten at age 5 and progress each year from 1st grade (age 6) through 12th grade (age 18). At which point they graduate from the "free" school system. At this point they can go to university (also called college) entirely at their own expense. (scholarships full or partial may be available depending on many variables).

There will be some slight variation of the ages because of when the child's birthday falls but essentially those are the ages.

Primary schools typically have Kindergarten - 6th grade.
Then Jr High School will have 7th and 8th (alternatively may be called middle school and have grades 6-8 or 7-9)
High school is grades 9-12.

These can also be broken down quite differently depending on the school district and in some cases all grades may even be in one building together.

Kindergarten at 5 or 6 (there are nurseries and pre-schools, but usually private). Elementary school is K-6 (usually to 12 years old), middle school or junior high is grades 7-9, high school is 10-12. Graduate around 18 years of age. Then go to 2 year junior college or 4 year college/university.

I went into pre-school at 2, then kindergarten, then elementary school (grades 1-5), then middle school (grades 6-8), then high school (grades 9-12), then into college for as long as it takes to get a degree. At that point, it just depends on what type of degree you're getting (associates or bachelors) and how hard you work. Typically tho, its supposed to take about 4 years- freshman, sophomore, junior, senior years. After that, you can go to Graduate school if you like, to get a Masters degree.

This may be different in different areas. For example, my son: because I worked full-time as a single parent, he was in day care until the age of 4. At 4 he was in pre-kindergarten. At 5 he was in kindergarten. Then to 1st grade. His elementary school went to 6th grade, then to Jr high 7, 8 & 9 grade. Then 2 high school thru 12th grade. Then on to college/university (those words are interchangable in the US) --- areas in which I know this differs, for example, my sister's daughter lives in the same state, but thier school system goes to Jr High at 5th grade & then 6,7, & 8 are Jr High with 9,10,11, & 12 being high-school.

In both of our areas 4 year old pre-kindergarten is not a requirment. Becuase of the high cost of tuition, my sister's daughter did not start until 5 year old kindergarten.

Sometimes a child will test higher, for example my son skipped 2nd grade & went on to third. My sister's daughter skipped 4th & went to 5th. Some kids struggle and may repeat a grade if needed. For example I am now 40, my son is 18 & in college. My 1/2 sister is also his age & had to repeat the 8th grade. That year our father died & it really hit her hard to loose her dad. Struggling thru the greving process made it dificult for her to do well in school, so she repeated school that year. For my son, this was his grandfather, it was difficult, but not as hard as it was for my little 1/2 sister.

Feel free to post additional thoughts to your question & I wil do my best to answer them.

I live in Alabama... this very well could be different in different sates within the US; however, it is common in the U.S. to view school as 1st thru 12th grade or as 5k, then 1st thru 12th grade.
