It comes from I Corinthians 11:11:4-6, "Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors his head, and every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, which is the same as having her head shaved. So if a woman does not cover her head, she should cut off her hair. If it is a disgrace for a woman to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her own head.
And 14-15, "Nature itself teaches you neither that it is disgraceful for a man to have long hair nor that hair is a woman's glory, for hair is given as a substitute for coverings."
Long hair on a woman is her sign of being under authority, much as a prayer shawl is for Jews.

Our standards come directly from the bible. I Corinthians 11:15 states how it is a womens glory to have long hair.1 Corinthians 11:6 says that, it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven.and1 Corinthians 11:14-15 says Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. this is just a few verses in the bible we go by as to why we have long hair and never trim or cut it. I hope this has helped you. I can further help you if want you can email me at Barbie_chikk@yahoo.com God Bless!

I know many Pentecostal women, and they all cut or trim their hair. This may be some regional thing. However, they do all wear their hair rather long.
1 Corinthians 11:6-7 If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. A man ought not to cover his head
1 Corinthians 11:14-15 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
As I understand it, Pentecostal women wear long hair to symbolize that they are under the authority of a man, either their father, a caretaker, their husband, or grown son who takes care of them. Of course, it becomes a sort of denominational fashion or distinctive after a time.

There are references to women having long hair in Corinthians, it doesn't answers the question how long is long.... longer than a man's hair? Corithians probably refers in places to greek cultural norms about wearing hats... maybe... but also refers sometimes to nature and creation which is transcultural and it isnt always easy to tell which is which.
Some things like wearing pants probably are similar. Women should dress in a feminine manner and men in a masculine and porbably avoid androgenous styles of hair and dress.... in the work place and for practical purposes it may be necessary to be a little more free in this area than when you have total choice of personal dress, so you need to follow your concience and certainly women should not dress in a way that temps or distracts men but it should be apporpriate.
And Im afraid what is appropriate is not as cut and dry as it sounds and you need to use your judgement. Sometimes a person imposes tules on others because they had a problem with something, makeup perhaps, where another person may not have an issue at all.... and so the standards for one may not be the same as for another in these areas and we need to cut eachother some slack

SO, I dont really KNOW the answer- BUT! I'm thinking you could either peruse a Pentacostal bible ( whatever version it is they read from) - OR- just hang around a pentecostal church- catch a nice pentecostal girl coming out of service. You could even do one better, get up early and attend service- befriend that nice Pentecostal girl.
This is all assuming Pentecostals are nice people- and open to discussing matters of appearance. Just be sure an smile before you ask.

1 Corinthian 11.
This has been interpreted differently in different congregations.
in Verse 5 it states:
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
Now in my congregation it is explaining that when we must cover our heads when we pray, usually with a veil.
In Vers 6 it says:
6For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
This tells us we should not cut our hair, becuase we do not cover our heads all the time.
the headcovering is a spiritual covering, and our natural covering is our longhair as it is described in Verse 14 & 15:
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
15But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
The purpose of the head covering and not cutting the hair is to Honor God.

This simply means that a woman is to have hair. Many women have adopted the manish hair look , short spiked, especially the lesbians. Men are to have short hair and woman should have hair that doesn't have to be long, but that makes them look like a woman.

I Corinthians 11:2-16.
:2 Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you. 3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, 5 but every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as if her head were shaven. 6 For if a woman will not be covered, then let her be shorn! But since it is disgraceful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. 7 For indeed a man ought not to cover his head, being the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. 9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 For this reason the woman should have authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 In any case, woman is not independent of man, nor man of woman, in the Lord; 12 for as woman is [created] from man, so man is now [born] through woman. And all things are from God. 13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering. 16 But if anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God.
Pay special note to the last verse of this section where it tells us that if it is a cause for contention (argument) then there is no such law or (practice) in the churches of God. It was a cultural thing of that era and not a law or edict from the church. I am extremely familiar with the UPC and their standards.

Well, you just hit on it --- it's a Pentecostal thing, not a universal Christian thing.
