Hey - he's only the Pope. To muslims, that should be no more meaningful than any other old, opinionated guy quoting some manuscript.

If what the Pope says doesn't matter, why all the fuss?

Regardless of what Catholicism means to Islam, the Pope is an influential leader of a religious community and it is widely accepted that such leaders should be tolerant of other religious communities. He is also the representative of the community of Catholicism. Therefore, when he speaks, he speaks for all Catholics. One would hope Catholics as a whole would not want to be insulting in any way to another religious group.

I hope that all Muslims understand that the Pope was merely not clear enough in making his point. He was not referring to all of Islam, but only those individuals (supposedly) within the religion who use violence for religious means.

Arabs have a clear memory of what the Crusaders did in Arab lands. The Pope quoted a Christian leader who spoke against Islam not long after the Crusades. The Pope should have used the Crusaders as the example of evil. He could have been an example of how Christianity has changed from violence to peace. Instead he chose to disrespect others' religion. Totally unacceptable for a leader of one of the largest religious groups in the world.

because he is the Pope and he is looked up to by believers and non believers alike. therefore he is going to get a tongue lashing, but this is 2006
what was happening in the world prior to what he read.he should of had his advisors preview and discuss what effcts this would have on the Muslim community at large. although the Pope is trying to open up communication with all world religions some people cannot be rational.
but because he is the Pope he will keep trying.

He's speaking on behalf of all Catholics. Unless each Catholic claims they don't agree with the pope, it's like every Catholic had insulted the Muslim.

We must be as tolerant as possible to people who have been told that Jesus Christ is not the God of heaven.

They have a lack in understanding the divinity of the Lord (that the Lord is God) and we must understand and be kind.

God has the situation in hand.

We must look to the evil affections inside us first before looking at someone else's evil affections.
