If you're talking about classical-style singing, I'd go with Puccini's "Oh Mio Babino Caro." It's a popular aria.

When you're first taking lessons, it's easy to pick a popular song, but it's also not good for your lessons. You end up singing the song more than working on your voice, AND you end up attempting to copy the singer who sang the song, rather than create your own style. Both of these work against your vocal training.

Ask your vocal coach to select a good art song, one withing your range. This allows you to concentrate on both the song, and your voice.

I have taken voice lessons for several years. If you take voice lessons, your teacher should know the best songs for your voice range. Practice, by yourself, the scales. Use different vowel sounds. Songs that have runs up and down are good exercise for your voice. You should be able to figure out what kind of song fits your voice. Practice. Work on any song and work on completing each word that you sing. Pronounce the word sing-ing,,,,
not sing-en.

Work on breathing from your diaphragm and work on singing as much as you can on each breath. Good luck.

When you start voice lessons for the first time. You usually don't sing at the first couple of months. The first voice lessons are to make you understand the voice mechanism and how it works. The voice trainer will teach you how to breath correctly, how to use your muscles on your favor and you will also vocalize a lot.

Than the teacher will recommend you a song, aria, or method he/she thinks is adequate for your voice.

When I was taking voice lessons to learn how to sing Opera, My voice teacher did not let me sing anything. We were vocalizing 30 minutes twice a week for one year. Then she gave me my first song. She was my best teacher EVER!

What I do with my students is talk to them and see what their goals as a singers are. Some students just want to improve their breath, some others just want to sing what ever, and others want to improve their speaking voices. I help them to improve and rich their goals, I usually just vocalize with them for 1 or 2 months and then they start singing.

But for those students interested in singing classical and Opera, I use to vocalize with them more (at least 6 months) before to start singing. They start with Vaccai, and 24 Italian Songs, Aftter that, they start with Art song repertory and some baroque Arias, Finally when their technique is enough mature, I start working with the Opera repertory, the adequate repertory, ofcourse.

In my expereice and professional Opinion is better that way.

Good Luck in your singing
