I bought the car used, and for about six months I had no problems. The first problem I noticed was that the antenna quit retracting automatically when the car was turned off. Then It started blowing the fuse (no. 13) for the interior lights and radio. Usually when I try to replace it, the fuse will blow even before I can get it into the socket. Sometimes it will function for a few days before the fuse blows. What could be the problem here? I have had it to two service centers without luck. They can't seem to find the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

more than likely there is a bare wire some where and when it move a certain way it grounds out on something metal if your car has an aftermarket CD player in it I would check the wires on it first. If that is not the problem then it could be on any of the wires that run off that circuit

Sounds like you're dealing with an intermittent short. Since the auto-retract quit working, I would start with it. It may be bound up and overloading the motor that retracts the antenna. If that happens, the motor gets hot and the windings will short out...and blow the fuse. Try replacing the power antenna, or a cheaper fix would be to replace it with a standard non power antenna. Just be sure to tape and protect the power wires from shorting out....because you won't need them...only the coaxial antenna lead.

The only thing I can think of is "Are you using the correct amperage fuse?" If you are, try going up 5 (from a 10 to a 15, or 15 to 20). A difference of 5 should not cause any damage to your system, and it may be just the clearance you need to stop blowing fuses.

But if that's not the problem, it would seem like there's a short in your electrical system somewhere.

There is a difference between a "Maintenance needed" light that comes on after a certain mileage, and a "check engine" light, so reject the first answer. NEVER take your battery cable off to reset a check engine light. At best you will have to reset your clock and radio presets, at worst the security system will shut down the whole car, and it will come back on again if the problem still exists so it's an exercise in futility anyway, so reject the second answer. Since you added fuel, chances are the gas cap is just loose. Go turn it until it clicks, and I'll bet you a dollar the light will go off. Not immediately, but after a day of driving. Go back to 89 at your next fill, but it won't hurt you to drive the car. In the event the light does stay on, just take it in and have them scan for error codes and advise you from there.

"the fuse will blow even before I can get it into the socket."

That's quite a feat to blow a fuse without installing it!

I'd suspect the antenna motor or a short in wiring.
