I've always wondered why cats wink at you. Is it a sign of affection? Something else? I notice all cats do it, not just mine.

I've read that it is almost like blowing you a kiss, and they are letting you know they don't see you as a threat.

Cat Wink

For house cats and some other cat species, blinking (both eyes), and then gazing at you or looking briefly to the side, is a polite acknowledgement, often interpreted to mean "I trust you not to do anything threatening while I'm not looking."

Winking (one eye) is much more specific than most humans notice, and can be a response to discomfort (an ouch or an itch), or questioning (as in "oops could I possibly have miscalculated there" or "LOL what on earth are you doing this time, Human!")

My kitty friend always winks before scratching her ear, after a loud, high-pitched noise, or after bumping her head. Each eye and the speed of the wink seems to consistently mean different things, but I have trouble keeping track of which is which.

This all sounds strange at first, until you start taking note of what happens when. Can't believe it? Don't take my word for it. Observe for yourself!

Cats like to look around at all times and will not close both eyes unless they are ready to nap or content, to keep an eye, literally, on what is going on. Usually a cat will keep the eye half closed before actually "winking". Remember, cats don't care how silly they look! If that eye is dry or feels funny, they'll do it. Plus as cats go to sleep, sometimes the nerve that controls the eyes and haws (the third eyelids) will go to sleep first, causing funny eye blinks/winks. Ever see a cat wake up and have it's third eyelid still closed? That's the nerve not waking up before the cat has! :)

Every so often, a cat lets you into their secret life. I don't know if it's intentional or not. But, when they do, they wink as a way of knowing that you are lucky enough to have the priviledge of having that small glimpse into their far superior world.

Other than that, they do it to clean their eyes.

My one cat does it, too, I don't know why cats do that, but it is sure neat to see. Maybe it is a sign of affection. My cats also sit up and beg, it is so neat.

blinking is a sign of trust, winking there might be something wrong with the cat's eye.

All cats wink, it's a sign of saying "your ok, I'm ok"
So, maybe if you can't don't then, maybe they are trying to tell you that your not ok with them. Or their not ok with you.
