You would get more appropriate answers if you asked "Why doesn't America have socialized medicine". The fact is: it's been looked into. I respect our neighbors to the north (Canada) but I feel that our level of medicine is superior to theirs. We can see a doctor almost instantly. If we need a specialist, we can see them almost instantly. There are many Canadians that come to the United States for certain medical needs simply because they don't want to wait months to see a doctor.
The obvious trade-off is that medical care is more expensive here and unavailable for some extremely low income people. It's not a perfect system but I still prefer it to socialized medicine.

We need to do something about our health care system, but what goes on in European countries wouldn't work here because we are so much bigger. It also doesn't work all that well. I have family in Germany, which has many social programs to the point where the average person is being taxed out of existence. When my cousin in Germany was pregnant, she would sit at a clinic for 6 hours for a checkup and then might not get seen that day. You can get a better plan there, but then you're right back to where we are, that people with money can get better care than those without.
For the poor in this country, we do have Medicaid. This is not the same as Medicare for the elderly.

Because big industry and insurance companies make toooooooo much money with our current system, why would they want to change that.
And, when you have socialized health care, everyone and anyone can get everything and anything done. There are huge waiting lists for simple procedures, and there is no incentive to become a doctor if you are getting paid by the government, you can't charge your own rates, you have to take what the government pays you.

We do have a welfare system, but we keep our medical care system privatized in order to maintain the quality. European hospitals suck.

because those systems dont work, canada has one and what do they do when they get sick? they come to the u.s. so they can get in to see a dr. programs like that dont help anyone becuase everyone runs to the doc with every little cold and problem because it don't cost them anything. it takes people months just to get in to see a dr, and then you have to see the one that the government tells you to go to, even if they are not any good. when you give up your freedom for security you end up not having either.

It is not free. You pay a 13.5% tax on everything you buy including a cup of coffee.Every wonder why so many people there can not afford to buy their own home. Most everyone rents forever. In the U.S.A almost everyone eventually OWNS their own home.

Had a good one at one time. Now the poor have to fend for themselves and even if they did need help they usually do not get much.
